I guess I now know why this might have been out to someone already. :-) Shame, because it's perfect otherwise. The screen bleed at the lower left is obvious in letterbox movies, but that's not a problem for me.

However the power brick at 116W is hot enough to fry an egg. Fine in winter, but not summer. C'est la vie.

If it goes back I might treat myself to an upgrade to the Dell. This resolution is good enough to justify the money now I've seen it in action. What do they say? Buy cheap and buy twice? :-> Mind you, you could nearly have two of these for the price of the Dell!

Where dell you see the Dell in action?
I can't find anywhere that stocks it.
I'd like to see the anti-glare issue before I commit.

I meant now that I've seen this resolution in action, not the Dell specifically. I still associate Dell with quality when it comes to screens. My 1600x1200 was certainly worth the premium I paid for that a long time ago.

Of course if I buy the Dell there'll be no graphics card upgrade this year. Though Just Cause2 just ran very nicely at 1080p-ish resolution. The DGM certainly scales well.

Mmm... I'm half temped to try a swap, but I tend to be a once bitten, twice shy kind of person. :->

Edit: anti-glare doesn't bother me. I'm pretty sure my old Dell has something similar.

PS The Dell is in stock, er... elsewhere.

I guess it depends on the timeframe and the fault. But I would expect the 14 day satisfaction guarantee to be worth something. :-) Of course "satisfaction" can mean a variety of things.
 
@Andrew - for the price of the DGM and its great potential, surely it is worth another punt...?

Mine has its niggles but for the money I paid and the OC warranty I just see it as a great buy.

The 24" Dell that it replaced was not a patch on the screen quality and vividness of the DGM.

You might be right. I need to get some sleep and give myself time to decide what I want. The only definite at the moment is that I want another screen this size & resolution.

I just read through the TFTCentral review and had a look at the hidden menu. Nothing obviously different (from his screen) stands out, but he does say that the default is 50% brightness. Mine started at 80% and resets to 80%. I'm also not convinced the PSU should be too hot to hold. Mind you, my first laptop was like that, and that went on for years.

The review says their unit drew 104W at 100%. Mine is pulling 116W at 80%... and any other % I set it to. :-)

I've tested mine for dead pixels and there doesn't appear to be any.

I know a lot of people have mentioned that, on a black screen, there is a fair bit of glow from the bottom right hand corner. Mine is also like this.

Could you all please check something for me?
On a completely white background sitting around 2ft from the monitor with the top of the monitor at eye level, does the screen appear distinctly off-white towards the bottom right of the screen?

I can definitely say that with a completely white background there are no parts of my DGM that look off-white.
With a completely black background I do suffer from IPS glow and a nasty bit of backlight bleed against the bottom centre-left. It's still worth the £320 I paid though :)

Thanks for replying. The slight off-white I'm talking about appears to be towards the bottom half of the screen. It's very slight and I'm probably being over-critical! Can't see any visible backlight bleed, just IPS glow. I appreciate that looking at a completely black or white screen aren't normal viewing conditions though. All in all it's a great screen!

Anyone else have this on a completely white background? A vertical slightly greyish tint horizontal band around 2cm thick, about an inch up from the bottom edge of the monitor? It's quite subtle.

That's a tricky one Hamster. I imagine it's a side effect of the fact that most of these panels seem to have some extra brightness at the bottom of the screen. Mine doesn't have anything too obvious in desktop use or gaming but I'm not going to peer too hard in case I start to get overly critical.

Apart from anything else that's not part of the screen I'll ever spend much time staring at. So as long as there's nothing distracting going on down there, in your position I'd be inclined to live with it. But we all have to make our own decision on this kind of thing. The bottom line is it's a bargain monitor and few are going to be perfect.

With my "MIA" brightness control I'm in two minds. I can dim the screen acceptably using the contrast setting, but I'm not sure of the long term prospects for running the thing at what seems like max brightness. Plus I could live with a little less heat being pumped out of the PSU brick. :-)

Of course I've no idea if the wattage will drop much even with brightness at 50%, and if this is the electricty/heat price you have to pay for a screen like this I can probably live with it.

I've put in a note with OcUK and will see if there's anything they or DGM can suggest. After some sleep it was definitely a very pleasant experience to turn this on. I'd just rather not have to mess with the contrast or wear shades. :-)

Edit: apparently I need to deal with DGM for a repair.

can anyone take a pic of the power supply for this please, bottom of it, i have the dgm and an achieva, when i get rid of the achieva ,i want to make sure i sell the right power supply.

@Hamster - there is nothing obvious about my screen when I have noticed a white background but I would not want to go and look for problems as then I know I would focus too much on it and thus the "none issue" could then become too important to me.

@Andrew - Whether you decide to return for an exchange or keep is up to you but can you not control both the brightness and contrast via you GPU software controls...? I have not even measured my wattage and I do not intend to for similar reasons to the above. I suppose that is why I have never looked at the consumption used by my 50" plasma, instead I just enjoy using it for what we have bought it for.

I've been using a PC for years, but until five minutes ago had never done that... or needed to. However you're right, it does work! It doesn't alter the power draw, but I've been able to calibrate the screen to basic, amateur levels now (http://epaperpress.com/monitorcal/) and am pleased with the result. I just have to decided whether I want to contact DGM and get the panel tweaked to 100% functionality.

I suppose if I'm happy with what I have now, I have 3 years for another fault to develop. So might as well live with it. It's not as if the brightness setting is something I usual alter on a monitor once I've found a setting I'm comfortable with.

That's fair enough, and I can see where you're coming from. But I am much more careful with my overall power use, for both budgetary and philosophical reasons. But it's something I forgot to research before hitting the buy button.

At the other end of the desk I have three very cheap 20" monitors on my sim racing machine (which is only turned on for driving), and together they draw slightly more than this single panel, driving a resolution almost 1.5 times greater.

I guess it's an IPS thing. You gain quality (and this is undoubtedly a better screen than those Samsungs) but on a machine which runs for an average of about 8 hours a day (often quite a bit more) I'm going to be using about £50 more electricity a year compared to my Dell 1600x1200 (42W v 117W). Twice the size (give or take) would scale up to 84W if all things were equal, and this is quite a step up from 84 in efficiency terms.

Anyway, this kind of thing is probably a bit anal for most folk, but someone out there with a similar mindset may appreciate the input. I guess I shall just have to get used to turning the thing off when I'm away for a while. Or get very strict with other energy use while I'm sat here.

On balance it's probably a fair swap. :-)

Edit: having said that, I'm getting quite toasty sat in front of a warm monitor and beside a hot power brick. Maybe I'll put the Dell back on this PC for the summer. ;-)
 
I would always use the NVidia brightness / contrast and vibrancy adjustments to control my Dell monitor but I have not bothered to as yet with the DGM.

I tend to think that as I made an informed purchase with my 50" Plasma TV I can't complain that I find the power usage to be an issue - which I don't as the picture benefits outweigh any consumption concerns. I didn't expect to move up to a 27" monitor and not use more electricity than my 24" Dell. How much more, well I do not know and I don't want to. I only have the monitor on when I'm sat in front of the screen. I have the power button on the PC configured to S3 sleep which I use all the time when I'm away from the PC. That for me is enough without compromising my enjoyment.

I make it less than £26-27 unless you are grossly over-paying for your leccy
