LOTRO free to play going ahead.

Played this when it first came out but stopped playing after the first expansion as I'd capped and done pretty much everything you could do at the time and boredom set in and the lack of end-game then decimated my guild and friend list so not much reason left to play and other MMO's were starting so LOTRO got dropped (I seem to remember it really ****ing me off with some PvP Update which kind of neutered my Hunter too, but so long ago I've forgotten)

Anyway, was bored the other day and saw it was on STEAM, so thought I'd give it a bash again on a trial with F2P only, sadly seem to have lost all my old Codemasters Account characters as I had no idea they were being transferred, even though I still use the same Email address I definitely got no notices about any changes, so thanks CM...

I'm having quite a problem with the game crashing/locking up (PC unresponsive and needs a hard reset) though and this is really not making me wanting to invest any time or money back into it, looking online it seems there's a lot having the same problem, although I've now eliminated the main culprit (Sound Drivers/Card) it is still happening :(

Contrary to the above post I would say avoid PvMP like the plague

I agree with you, because last weekend was ridiculous.

Runekeeper get's two 3.5k crits and then ends it with a 7.8k crit (i have 17k health), all in a row and my crits are below the damage of my attacks, like Bestial Claws, 988 damage and it crits for like 930 damage. The only time it goes above 988 is when i get a devastating hit.

Game is clearly broken on the PvMP side of things.

There's a lot of new areas, so if you've a lifetime account, why not. There've been a lot of changes in the legendary weapon system though. I've been away for various periods of time too (I also have a lifetime account) and have found it quite hard to keep up.

They've also changed some of the skills and stats but not enough to worry about unless you into serious min-maxing with your build or want to do raiding etc

I would love to find the magic I had with this game but I think its over for me. My kinship died slowly no matter how much time and effort I put in people just didn't want to play anymore and it left us losing more than we were recruiting. This made my officers consider a merge as we were in a massive decline and people just didn't want to work hard, they wanted to enjoy the game.

So after 3 years as kinship leader my kin came to be dead and my friends all moved on or stopped playing. Now if I sign on I sigh and sign off. This is all on Gilrain server, probably the lowest populated.

I tried to get back into this, still feels rather grindy though, but one thing it's got going for it in a HUGE way compared to other games is the legendary weapon customisation which is outstanding :)

LOTRO's big problem is that it gets distinctly 'meh' for a good 10 levels after Moria. I believe Rohan is pretty awesome, but I just haven't had the endurance to grind my way through the intervening levels, the design and quests just seemed really lazy compared to the early game.

I thought they updated monsters to be stronger? was pre rohan when I last played and that was bad enough with creeps getting slaughtered unless they had twice the number or a poor freep raid.

I do think the same, mirkwood wasn't to bad, was depressing but its meant to be gloomy. I hate the rep grinds like the Galadhrim I don't understand the whole repeatable quests, who wants to do the same quests 20 times?

Keep meaning to get back into this properly. I seem to have a weekend where I play it nonstop and then won't load the game for a couple of months. I'm just starting Mirkwood iirc.

It saddens me that lotro has died regardless of how many times on here i have defended it down the years.

I was a beta tester and played 7/8 hours a day from launch all the way to 75 but cannot find the motivation to level my champ, min, rk, hunt and tank to 85.

The game itself content wise has suffered immensely if you compare it back to SOA and even MOM.

Too much going on and too many other mmo's surpassing lotro.

Been a little while since I played Lotro, but I remember Lothlórien after moria being really meh. its full of go fetch quests that you just repeat over and over.

It's like they got really lazy with the questing aspect... rohan on the other hand I really really enjoyed. Have a couple of lvl 85 chars kicking around :)

Tempted to go back and level another one of my chars :D

I get the feeling that the areas after Moria were all developed by a different team, or at least the quests were. There's a definite change and not for the better!

It's like they expanded on the hobbit fetch quests you get in oatbarton(evendim). I personally dislike the quests in Loth, but some people seem to enjoy them.

I gave up in Mirkwood, the Ashenslades. It was one of those times where they tell you to go to a spot and kill a dozen wargs, and the follow up quest is to go back and kill a dozen more. Just in case it didn't get bored the first time around :p

Does the mounted combat get easier? tried it didn't like it and never went back to the game after that.

I went back to LoTRO a little while ago and tried the mounted combat. Can't say I really enjoy it at all. Any opportunity I had, I jumped off the mount and started twanging my bow at the enemy like the old days :)

One good thing ... Turbine have FINALLY ditched the requirement for .net 1.1 .... only about 5 years too late mind :)

I haven't got to mounted combat yet.

I've heard it's reasonably effective for classes with a ranged attack, once you've got the hang of controlling your horse. However guardians seriously loose out because they have no ranged attack.

In addition, skills don't work on horse back including at least most of the guardian aggro generating skills. I main guardian, so I'm not sure what I'm going to think.
