Yup - but don't forget that there's a 3D match engine in there which, while not visually sophisticated, can certainly deliver the thrills and have you making involuntary noises that scare the cat/dog/child/neighbours :)

Trust me - once your imagination starts turning those walls of statistics into real footballers, with potential and egos and loyal gratitude and red mist, it'll hold your attention for more than a while :)

I must say I do want to get stuck in! Has there been a release date for 2014 yet?

There's FM Classic mode, which is less intensive than the full-blown FM, though I've not tried it myself.

Or of you've got a decent smartphone or tablet, give the mobile FM a go. It's very, very similar to the old Championship Manager (which FM is based on) and much easier to get into.

I agree with the other posts though. Get into it and you won't get out. While it's daunting at first, it sucks you in. Just turn off the press conferences (get your assistant manager to deal with them), or you'll get annoyed at the repetition.

It'll be the usual early-mid November, though if you pre-order you'll get the beta a couple of weeks before release (and games can apparently be carried over to the gold release).

I have found a little problem here - I tried to scout some players and now I'm stuck in a loop. I can't 'unscout' and I can't get rid of it. BEcause of this I don't think some of my scouts can scout players as they are queued up if you follow. I've tried deleting all of the finished assignments. Anybody seen this before?

Depends what a while means.

If 500 hours is a while, then this is the right game for you.

Beware. Your girlfriend/friends/family/wife etc. may not be happy

Yes! I am known to pour a lot of hours into a game. It's just the learning curve that I'm finding off putting! Hopefully it's something I would be able to pick up quickly. I just need to click the buy button, can't really moan at £12!

Start with big teams, City, Chelsea, Juventus, Bayern Munchen, Man United etc.

If you feel that is too easy, take 'smaller' sides, Porto, SLB, Ajax, PSV, Everton, Villa etc.

Its easy to get used to, no problem. You can also ask here for some tips too :)
 
I would say get 13 to learn the basics. It is such a quality game. I do not consider myself a football fan at all yet I find I can't put this down. I love the strategy and the tactical side of the game. There is something so sweet about developing your own youth squad and watching them grow. I found a young brazilian 15 year old and bought him for £500k. I sent him abroad for 2 seasons for a work permit then trained him hard. He's now 28 years old, my captain, and worth £40 million. He is ace. I gambled he would turn into something special and he certainly has. It's this aspect of the game that is awesome and there is simply nothing else like it. The fact you can nurture and develop is great and the fact the game is so dynamic. Every game is unique.
 
Yep, I found a brazilian winger (regen) named Fabiano when he was 15. Kept an eye on him until he turned 18 and signed him up. Because of injuries he started a few games and was useless but I stuck at it with him and he became a solid first team member. Then at the age of 27 Arsenal came in with a £35M bid and he wanted to leave! It broke my heart :(.
 
In league 1 with Chester, mid way through the league and I'm 3rd.

My team's on fire, I've kept the same players for about the last 3 years now ha, all growing up with each other and they're playing VERY well.

Statistically they're not great, and I'm scared to get into the Championship.

I can't make a profit to save my life though and now it's starting to wind me up, first season I made 500K, now I make nothing.

And I'm getting sick of people demanding first team football/starts, especially WHEN I'M GIVING IT TO THEM?!

The manager awards in this game are retarded. I'm managing Dortmund, we won the league with a record points total, also going undefeated for the entire Bundesliga season, we won the Super Cup and also the Deutscher Pokal, we were unfortunately knocked out of the CL in the semi final by Man City who were in turn defeated in the final by Barca. For some reason Jupp Heynckes was voted as the second best manager in the league that year despite Bayern winning absolutely nothing at all, I didn't even make the top three. :confused:

With financial restrictions it can be hard when your promoted. Done it with a cash strapped club from league 2 to the premiership and it always took a season of avoiding relegation in-between promotions. The best thing is to start off with a very young side and they will grow better as you move up the divisions.

Though some players I had from league 2 could not cut it in the premiership, was a bit sad to sell them after all they had done for the club.
 
Yeah, I've been using a team I built a few years ago, they've all started to grow.
Some of them are adequate, but others just won't cut it, they were getting out classed in League 1, but I didn't have the money.

Now in the Championship?

The board's given me a decent wage budget and 3.4 million transfer, but still, the team would need a full rejig and then they wouldn't play well together.

I've had these players since Blue Square Bet North some of them.

Three good ways to make quick money in the lower leagues:

- always sell your peripheral players when you get promoted, and don't be afraid to sell your better players as most of your squad will likely have had good season stats if you've gone up - just tripple their asking price and offer them out. Then double it and do the same if you get no biters. Just don't sell the players who will make a definite difference in the new league.

- just before the seasons change (around the 24th June) start arranging your own friendlies away at all the biggest clubs, this way you don't have to pay a fee and you should make £100k per game.

- cup runs. You have the chance of getting a Prem team as earlier as the end of August or beginning of September in the second round of the League Cup. FA Cup third round is a good opportunity too, and being in the Champ now you'll automatically enter the competition at this round.
 
In Blue Square Bet North, I made 500K profit (Which tbh, is more than I've made except in League 1 due to my FA Cup performances) just by playing, but then all of a sudden it just dropped straight off as the club was pro (I'm assuming I should have just stayed Semi Pro for a while and longer in the Blue Square North, that way I could have really made my star Keith Murphy better, he's my frontal attack)

And I didn't really have players to sell, as my team was young, so they're just learning etc, I had to rotate around.

Sometimes your board will make you go pro and you have no choice.
