I've just tried deleting the files, works fine but goes straight to the many faiths and beliefs screen, when it loads that screen it also triggers the game save symbol in the bottom corner & it must be the save that causes your crash

Could be. If it's a save crash, try turning off the cloud save option in Uplay. It's borked.
Seemed to fix it. Removed the save files, game loads fine. I put them back, it crashes instantly again.
Guess I'm starting over. Had only just gotten the Jackdaw though so I didn't lose much time. Gonna back up the saves now though!

Works fantastically on my 7990.
Hmm think I'll back up mine too, I'd hate to start at the beginning, quite a bit into the story now!
Wouldn't mind if you didn't have to progress the story to get access to some areas and items in the game
and on my 4.5 overclocked i5-2500k with a GTX 580

I've got this exact issue now, rest of the game is fine but can't even load up my save now cus I'm at this point.

theirs a big thread on ubisoft's forum about it but no fix, so far its 8 pages long

This has very little to do with the previous games, you can easily jump in
It`s an entirely different game, with no links to past games, so just jump on in there.

You could do what I did to catch up, read the plot summaries that a guy did on reddit. Not the most detailed but he covers the main gist of the story.

The only references to past games or characters are only found in the Animus section and not in the actual game.
Actually the main character you play is linked quite strongly to previous games.

Edward is the Father of Haytham from AssCreed 3.He's also Ratonhnhaké:ton's Grandfather. They are ancestor's of Desmond, and also the closest relation's timewise we know about Desmond apart from his Dad (William)
