Airfix

Some great looking models here...making me very jealous as my skills are / were no where near what are on show.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know where I can get a full hull resin model of a Trafalgar Class submarine? Have seen the Airfix plastic one, but would like to go for a resin one.

The plastic moulded inlet manifold pipe didn't line up with the radiator header box - so out with the sprue cutters, snipped of the moulded plastic pipe, and on with a wee doubrie of rubber piping which I had left over from an earlier build (Tamiya Yamaha YZF R1).

Similarly, it looked like the plastic moulding for the pipe which leads from the rad header box to the radiator won't line up, so I've snipped that off, drilled and fitted a length of insulated wire to make a new "hose" :)

I did try using tiny strips of alumiun foil to make hose clamps, but couldn't get them to fit :rolleyes: so out with the silver marker pen instead! Doesn't look too shabby from a distance!
 
I'm just about to enter the model world (done 40k) and am interesting in IJN model ships from 1/700 to 1/350 scale.

Does anyone know of any good model shops in the UK please?
 
Ships coming along nicely. Quite a bot of touching up along the sides to do, but moving along nicely. This is a massive project though!!!

This is a partwork. It's not something I usually do as it can be a slow process, but I've always wanted to build this ship and Artesania Latina are only releasing it through partwork, so I had no choice really. But it's extremely complex. I'm receiving issues faster than I can build them.

First things first, it is not a rip-off as so many suggest. The entire series comes to £804. That is around ££150 dearer than the suggested RRP of these AL ships. But you obviously get 135 magazines which are quite educational about history and have great instructions, plus, you also get free gifts including mini rotary tool set worth about £40. Although I use a Dremel 8200 and flexi shaft.

The ship is a plank on frame construction. The next few pics should give you an idea of how it's constructed.

As she stands today with galleries fitted, beak and gunport linings finished and third deck planking started.

I really like that. You ought to consider posting a build thread over on "Florymodels". the guys there would like to see that I reckon.

Thank you, had a look of them and few of them had some ships, but not the ones I wanted.

I decided that I really don't like waterline ships or 1/700 ships in general, they lack so much detail and look cheap. But beggers can't be choosers and it looks like the 1/350 range is very limited in what ships are available, which I find insane. All these years since they been producing kits and the range is small. :/

Looking at the Skywave kits now, they 1/700 but they offer full hulls that allow you to display them nicely.
 
I'd love to get back into models, but I am fed up of doing ships and planes.

The wheels break off planes, and the masts break on the ships.... Has anyone tried tanks, and are they at least a little less delicate?

Yeah I had a few planes when I was young, the wheels would break off, the tail wings, the weapons and radio ariels would break off.

Won't do them again though, am sure things will be different now but I have no interest in planes only IJN ships because they are kawaii~ :p

My interest in model ships was started from playing Kancolle.

It's insanely popular in Japan where it has spawned 1000's of artworks, music videos, mechanise from mugs to shirts (in-fact, I get my Shimakaze shirt tomorrow), Manga, Novels, Books and it has a Anime TV series airing this year. It's so popular that to register for the game, you have to win the "lottery" to play, took me 3+ days of staying up all night and clicking a button every 5 minutes for 30 minutes till I won or didn't win. :p

It's one of the top searched things in Google over there and one of the most used hashtags in Twitter in Japan.

So because of one free to play game, I want to build ships. :D

Never understood that games popularity. Though saying that, I have never really liked browser based games, nor have I enjoyed card games too much.

I only do Armour, they are not as robust as they may seem, suspension units give under track weight (especially if using metal after market or the rubber bands supplied). Good Armour kits from Dragon et al. normally come with some form of P.E. which bend/break/snap at the earliest opportunity.

Although with armour you do have the "Battle damage" get out clause ;) ;) :p

I used to work with a guy a Heathrow who was excellent at doing Tanks like that.

Very nice well done.
