It was! Nice friendly and lively bunch of folks - Always the case with younger couples and their friends/family though :p Two times their friends wanted photos with me as well - Bit different I guess but hey ho!

My Sigma 35mm didn't come, as they didn't actually dispatch it! Apparently a warehouse issue, despite me getting an email to say it was dispatched. :( Gonna have to wait a bit now, as they're out of stock. ;-(
 
So they lied about it being dispatched? Sounds like grounds for receiving some money back to me!
 
MRK are you Robbie?anyway those head shots of the girls look great but it says on the info was taken with 35mm,yet 35mm is not supposed to be good for closeups so how do you do it?do you take from further away then crop in close?i started a thread because i want the 35mm sigma and the 85mm canon for portraits but if its possible to get great shots like yours with a 35mm then why waste my money on buying both?

Do you really not see the distortion in the second shot? The same shot with an 85mm would look much more natural. Having a 35mm and 85mm is a nice setup, plenty of wedding photographers just use those two lenses for the majority of their work.

It's not specific lens distortion that's the issue, it's the distortion you get from a wide angle 35mm lens (balloon face) compared to an 85mm lens.

Barrel/pin cushion distortion etc. is a completely different thing and not really an issue with either lens.
 
I think distortion can be either flattering eg making eyes big as in the kiddie pics or unflattering eg making ears and noses appear larger, it really depends on the subject and the angles used.

Oh yes, they can both be used. I'm just trying to highlight the differences between the two focal lengths to try and help. Probably making it worse though :D
 
There may be some moinor distortion but I use lens profile anyway and notice the corrected image only corrects vignette and slight distortion in the centre. You mostly notice the vignette correction though. There's not much in it. If you're shooting as close as the closest focus distance allows then yet you'll see distortion on a face as you would with any wide angle but step a few feet back and it's no issue.

I can tell you this, there isn't much, if any, distortion in the above pictures. If there was those girls would have told me about it :p

The comparisons shows in the above link will always vary, not all lenses of the same FL have the same distortion amount really.

Take yesterday's shots:





The 1st shot is close up, not min focus distance close but close. You can see a bit of distortion but her eyes have increased in size relative to everything else - Her face suits it though and it works out ok in my eyes given the rest of the frame.

The 2nd shot is taken a few feet back and looks the most natural but for the frame it works. As Rojin hints at above, depends on what you're going for really. For some it will work, for others maybe not so much.

Really like the processing on that second shot. Works well with skin tone, highlights in the hair and the outfit :)
 
Ah yes, that would have been the better choice of word I suppose :D

She had 6 outfits to change into, still going through all the pictures, deadline is Wednesday as the student who designed and made the outfits is using the photos for her final entry for the course :eek:
