BBC journos attacked in Russia while investigating reports of Russian troop casualties in Ukraine: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-29249642

Those pesky thugs, always wiping people's computer equipment.

they ar not the only journo`s attacked whilst investigating dead Russian troops - a group near the base in Russia (Russian ethnic journo`s) also got attacked and the gear wiped.

seems Russia doesn't want any news of its war dead to get out

Not looking good for Ukraine this winter, they are broke and they owe $4.5Bn to the country who supplies 80% of their gas :(

Looks like the rebels (Moscows) negotiating leverage is going up by the day.

I don't understand how the truce is still technically in place as it seems the fighting only lessened instead of stopping.

Quite clearly the Kiev neo-fascist junta started it by defending land they already control

Russian defence spending predicted to rise by 20% over the next three years. Worrying times...

It's a grey area, the truce required the Kiev forces to pull out of the DPR, and for the DPR forces to stay in the DPR, however it didn't dictate borders. The issue is that places like Donetsk airport were originally in the DPR but captured in the Kiev offensive before the truce, so technically although neither side is obeying the truce, neither side is breaking it either.

It's a big mess.

Cheers, that sort of makes sense. Doesn't sound like it bodes well for the future though.

I don't know why Russia even bothers paying for an army, it's not like they ever have need of it. All they need to do is set up a cheap package tour operator offering holidays to wherever Russia wants to declare war on and its citizens will volunteer to fight there while on holiday.

In all honesty, this has been a long time coming, Ukraine was an "artificial" state just like Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, it's quite impressive it stayed together as long as it has really, the reason being previous governments have sought to keep everyone in line, however the current government could not do that right after seizing power from the previous government who lost power due to trying to keep everyone in line.

If Kiev had used the full weight of it's military they could have crushed Crimean/Eastern rebels with ease, but then Russia would have most likely retaliated, so the was no way for Kiev to keep the country intact via force like previous governments did.

Awesome :D

Do you recall the "liberty fighters" in Crimeea, do_ron_ron? You admired their bravery and you defended their right to self determination. And then Putin himself proudly announced they were his troops all along.. :D

It takes a very specific mindset to be impervious to facts and logic.

Not seen that confession on the news anywhere ... care to share.

There are a lot of people fighting in parts of Crimea because ethnically they are Russian and want to rejoin/or have greater autonomy.

You see the same in many other parts of the world and in many other times. Sometimes due to the fact that Western countries have redrawn or created countries to suit their own needs rather than the people who live there. The classic is the Sykes - Picot agreement.

It takes a very specific mindset to continually swallow all propaganda.

Bit of an odd one this, the boss of French oil giant Total is killed in Moscow after his private jet collides with a snow plough on take off. The driver of the snow plough was said to be drunk.

Now this probably was just a tragic accident but I can't help wondering if it was at all convenient for Putin that this guy is removed from the equation. Total were said to be very active in Russia. Didn't a Polish PM who was an outspoken critic of the Kremlin also die in a plane crash in Russia? A drunk, Russian snow plough driver seems like a bit of a lazy stereotype that's a bit too easy to believe imo.

the total boss was a tacit supporter of Moscow

Total is an important player in the Russian energy market and Mr de Margerie was a staunch defender of maintaining ties, despite Western sanctions against Moscow over its actions in Ukraine.

Total is one of the biggest foreign investors in Russia and is planning to double its output from the country by 2020

Dozens Of Tanks Enter Ukraine From Russia

A column of 32 tanks has entered Ukraine from Russia, as clashes threaten to derail an ineffective ceasefire.

Ukraine's military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said a convoy made up of 32 tanks, 16 howitzer cannons and 30 trucks of troops and equipment had crossed the border into the rebel-controlled Luhansk region.

Those tanks are obviously carrying medical supplies as they are a part of the humanitarian convoy. The cannons will be used to send the supplies via flight to the Ukrainian soldiers behind the front line.
