Moto X+1... let the hype-beasting begin!

Ordering a product that you have no intention of keeping is an abuse of your consumer rights!

When it depends, if you intend to keep it if you like it then its fine. Its diffcult to know if your going to like a phone or not with out using it for awhile. There is no way I can tell if the battery life is good enough in store, or even through a review since its all random.

Stoosh

I hear where you're coming from putting a faulty phone on Ebay is not the best move. Good attitude to have - write it off and move on.

HTC do make decent phones but their QC and build quality is shoddy to say the least. I won't buy a HTC phone again.

Life is too short to be banging your head against an HTC brick wall. Phone was great untill it developed a fault. It was locked and pretty much standard although when the boot loop developed it displayed the 'tampered' message when going into boot menu? Disappointing none the less but then it meant I bought a Moto X

Eventually the Moto X will come down in price, but the Droid Turbo absolutely trounces the Moto X in specs I don't see why Motorola couldn't include the same specs in the new Moto X.

The old Moto X is a good phone and still can hold its own against the competition today but the memory was is the only issue and why I didn't buy one in the end...if they released the 32GB then it would've been a different story.

Wasn't real happy about the sole choice of 16GB model but by using Play Music and having no music on the phone the 16 GB (well a lot less in reality) it hasn't been a problem. If I was to buy a 2014 Moto X then it'd be through MotoMaker and a 32GB model (Though a trial through amazon might be an idea :D ).

Looking at a few Youtube vids reviews of the new Moto X I notice that even though it's a 5.2" phone it doesn't look all that big in the reviewers hands.

Agreed, but they were talking about ordering the 16GB from Amazon to try out and then even if they thought it was great sending it back and getting the 32GB version from Motorola. So like I said, ordering a product with no intention to buy is an abuse and I have heard of Amazon closing accounts if they get too many returns, which is fair enough.

Had a look at a Nexus 5 at same time as eventually buying a Moto X. It was a close call but there was mumblings of poor battery life with the Nexus. Though bigger than the Moto X (2013) I thought I could have lived with it. Motorola's interface swung it in the end.

I'm not overly worried about the new models battery. Sure it has a lot bigger screen to run but I'm sure a days use is doable. Personally I'm never too far from some power source to top up. Never run short with with the old model. It of course depends on your average days use. Speaking of which I've not noticed any Moto turbo chargers for new Moto X available in UK yet?

Camera - I must be the only mobile user that doesn't prioritize it.

Oh well, I've only ever sent back one item that was faulty to Amazon so doubt they'll be closing my account. They can of course please themselves as 'other outlets are available'

As far as getting a Moto X off them just to try and sending it back regardless then yes I think it is abusing them somewhat though that is what the distance selling regs seem to allow you to do. Though I broached the idea I'm not sure I'd be bothered to actually do it. If it's half as good as the 2013 Moto X then I'm sure Id like it

Ahh ok yeah that abusing the system, but if its abusing Amazon or any other big company that cuts corners and abusing every single thing under the sun then I don't feel as bad.

Pre order the leather one, misses as gotten a bamboo version, might steal the bamboo :p. Thinking 16gb is enough since I'll get a tablet soon (Nexus 9/iPad Air 2) for my media.

So after a week, here are my thoughts...

This is a good phone. It's well built, very solid and feels great in the hand. In terms of build quality it's definitely in the top tier. It's kinda like a Moto X 2013 crossed with a Nexus 4.

The software is... Android with sprinkles. Everything works great and the phone flies. This is definitely the fastest phone I've ever used stock Android on. Battery life is OK - nothing special, but it manages a full day for me. I can get around 3-4 hours of screen-on over 24 hours, which is nothing special but YMMV.

Moto's additions are useful and unobtrusive. Things work well and seem like they've been designed with the user in mind. I had some trouble with the phone mistaking general chatter for my key phrase a few times but I changed it and it has been fine since.

Overall, it's a good handset - but it's just good. Not amazing. It feels like an evolution from last year and it runs well against today's top dogs, but its relative lack of features (software and hardware) is reflected in the price (£395+). I'd say if you want a sleek, fast phone running stock Android in the absence of a 5" 2014 Nexus this is a great choice. But if you want more features, SD card, larger battery and so on you should probably look elsewhere (and compromise on the software).

The green one from Motomaker

...is going back. I like the white front but the back looks a bit cheap and isn't as subtle as I'd hoped.

Distance selling reqs are different if you order a custom one through Motomaker. Think they will allow you to swap it for a different one but not give a full refund.

I rang them and they said that they would send me a DHL label and I can return free of charge for a full refund. No label yet though so I might have to nudge today.

Anyways, I bought a black one from Amazon and it's a lot sleeker. Very nice phone, especially the dark metal ring around the edge.

I was going to mention when I saw the photo of the turquoise back, I have the turquoise back cover for my moto g and whenever I put it on, I love the look of it for about 3 days then I can't stand the sight of it. Really puts me off buying a phone with a permanent colour body, however good I think it looks.

Yeah, it's a great colour but I decided it just looks too loud. I want something a bit more chilled out and stylish.

I occasionally customize one at Motomaker. Always end up with black back and front with either gold or red trim and 32GB. Any colour so long as it's black :D Some of the colours look OK but doubt they may grind after a day or two. I kind of think the colours may be better if the front matched? Maybe not?

Cheers for the review Reflux. Sounds like the original Moto X ... not a great phone, more a good one. 3 to 4 hours screen on would be fine by me. Must say I do fancy one then I pick my 'old' moto x up and think I'll save myself four hundred and odd quid and stick with it .... for now ;)

Yeah, I think you've really got to choose carefully to get two complimentary colours. Very easy to get something that doesn't quite gel.

My GF has my old Moto X (2013) and to be honest the main difference between the two is the size and plastic vs. metal. The new phone feels better but the old one is very ergonomic. Hopefully the old one will receive L and the updated notifications from the X.

Not easy as you'll both use your X's differently ... but how does old and new battery life compare? I'd guess they're similar?

I think the new one is better. Hard to say as she's basically welded to candy crush, but yeah. I usually have more left.

Moto X 13 has been as good as any phone I've had in recent times for battery life. It's always got through the day quite easily. There was the occasional day when it would be below 20% by 8pm but since I had a clear out of a few apps it's not happened again. I don't bother gaming on my phone though.

:D

Haha, yeah, I don't get it. Not my kind of game at all.

Anyways, Motorola for some reason sent me details for an exchange yesterday. Rang them but couldn't get through. Finally got through today and they said they'd correct the mistake and they have sent me details for a return/refund. However, no shipping label included. Not sure if they expect me to pay for return shipping as the guy on the phone seemed to think they'd send me a pre-paid label....

EDIT: Brilliant, DHL label just arrived in my inbox. That saves me £50 sending it back to Germany!

For y'all, Motorola has confirmed that all their current phones will get Lollipop including (unsurprisingly) the Moto X 2014.

http://motorola-blog.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/its-official-android-50-lollipop-coming.html

May not have to wait too long either going on recent Moto update history

Don't know why despite telling myself otherwise I keep fancying the new Moto X :D Think I'd need to handle one first. No other phone on the market has any interest to me currently and apart from bigger display of new X doubt there isn't much new over the old X?

Great attitude to have Mate, and look what you ended up with the Moto X which isn't a bad shout at all.

I wasn't happy with 16GB being only available in the UK and you did well negating the issue by using Play music. Unfortunately on my commute the signal keeps dropping therefore I need to store music locally and have a few videos such as tv shows or films to watch as well and no doubt that 12GB or so that's available would be full in no time.

Great idea about trying out a Moto X 2014 via Amazon
I'm looking forward to seeing how Lollipop performs on the device, however it's a shame that Amazon don't have the basic black version in stock. Apparently it'll take them 1-2 months to have stock back in.

It's either going to be the Moto X 2014 or the Z3 but I'm more inclined to go for the Moto X 2014 because I'd like a stock experience that Moto X has besides I already have the Z3c and the Z3 would be a waste of money.

HTC were being plain stupid about the job. If after 3 returns it was still the same I didn't expect a good outcome. Despite explaining on the phone and writing details along with the phone they simply reset it and returned it within the day. A reset appeared to solve the issue but give it a minute and it'd crash and go into boot loop. Much preferred the Moto X over the HTC One M7 though it wasn't a bad phone by any means ... when it worked

I've only occasionally lost signal and Play Music seems to buffer and continue though extended loss of signal and I'd be reaching for the head unit radio button. Works a lot better than I ever expected but yes, no signal no listen. IF I was to buy a new Moto X then it'd be the 32GB model which would do me fine.

'Usually dispatched in 1 to 2 months' is no good to man or beast . No phone retailers locally stocks the Moto X so no chance to handle one. Really like the size of the old Moto X and Lollipop could give it a new lease of life. I suppose if I went through Motomaker I could return it if I didn't like it. Only the size that I'm not sure about. Then again if it was same size as old Moto X there'd be not a lot of point upgrading apart from 32GB of course. Like to try one of these bigger display phones though.

Moto X 2014 and 2013 for that matter, will more than likely get Lollipop a lot sooner than the Sony phones. The Z3c looked an option but don't want to go to a smaller screen than I already have. Bright screen and waterproof are good plus points.
