What film did you watch last night?

The Amazing Spider Man 2. 7/10

Have really enjoyed this incarnation of Spider man. Andrew Garfield fits Peter Parker a lot better than Toby McGuire. The quirky one liners from Spidey also reminded me of the cartoon version I use to watch many moons ago as a kid.

No country for old men - what an entirely dreary film. I'm actually surprised I managed to sit through it (it took two sittings as it was). 2/10. I gave it one more point than After Earth because that was just s***.
You clearly aren't a Coen Brothers fan, you'll struggle to find a film of theirs without that tone. My friends hated Inside Llewyn Davis but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You're probably right. After just Googling their films, the only one that I've seen that I actually like that they get a mention in is Spies Like Us :p

I guess they're a bit Marmite.

The Orphanage...

The Mrs brought it home from work. A Spanish film I'd never heard of but had Guillermo Del Toro's name on it. Unexpectedly excellent film and as a previous reviewer has already said, genuinely sent chills up me on several occasions. Very well done film with a couple of nice twists!

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb

Was pretty fun and if you've seen the other two well you know what to expect really!

Kinda made it more special to see RW knowing you won't see him again.

I'd give it 7.5/10

The only Coen Brothers films I enjoyed were The Big Lebowski and Fargo. Burn Before Reading and NCFOM were awful by comparison I thought. I should have realised when I couldn't get through the NCFOM book - just as boring.

NCFOM is great.

Of their films that I've seen, the weakest are Burn Before Reading and The Ladykillers. Intolerable Cruelty I quite liked, but many didn't.

Anyway.

I watched The Bourne Legacy last night. Not as good as the original Bourne trilogy. I didn't like the editing. I didn't like the protagonist's motivation. The fight scenes weren't as well done, like maybe Jeremy Renner wasn't as capable as Matt Damon.

Been off ill the past week so caught up on some films I'd been meaning to watch:

The Equalizer (2014) - 7/10
I'm a fan of Denzel but this isn't one of his finest films I must admit. Predictable and safe storyline but reasonably entertaining. Some faster paces sequences here and there but just felt like a Borne/Taken rip-off.

Taken 2 - 6/10
Personally I found the first film quite disturbing, particularly as I have a daughter and also supporting an anti human trafficking charity so receive some pretty horrendous reports from a business that is rife all over the world. That said it was pretty much what I was expecting from a sequel from a franchise that doesn’t have much of a storyline to it already. Extremely predictable throughout but entertaining enough if you don’t have anything else to watch and you enjoyed the first film. I felt the film was quite short at 1 ½ hours (not sure if that’s good or not) and the ending was quite lame.

Guardians of the Galaxy - 9/10
Bit of a latecomer to this film and having known nothing about it beforehand I had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised, what a fantastic film.
I’m getting quite into these comic films/TV shows and this is certainly one of the better ones. Again it was completely predictable (what film isn’t these days) but thoroughly entertaining all the same.
A film I would happily watch again after just finishing which is quite rare for me.

American Sniper - 7.5/10
Finally got around to watching this. I enjoy films that focus on snipers, particularly after the Tom Berenger Sniper series of the past couple of decades. Overall I found it a good film that focussed on the mental struggles with war in probably a very real way (rather than the whole Deerstalker thing).
Definitely would watch again sometime but certainly not my favourite of the genre.

Star Trek: Into the Darkness - 8.5/10
Big Trek film fan and the reboot films really are very well done indeed. Characters cast brilliantly and I just hope they can make a good number while they have them available. Let’s hope they move more away from the previous film storylines and do something a bit different.
Probably seen this 3 times now, still great!

Field of Dreams - watched in once before years and years ago, so figured I'd give it another go. Really good film. Strange plot but the characters are great. Love James Earl Jones. Quite moving in places.

Dracula Has Risen from the Grave.

Currently working my way through all the hammer dracs in order having not seen them for about 25 years at least.

Absolutely loving them but I think they go downhill after Taste the Blood of Dracula.

The Imitation Game

Brilliant film about a brilliant man. It's estimated that cracking the Enigma code shortened the war by as much as 2 years and potentially saved 14 million lives. All thanks to the genius of Alan Turing. Farther of modern computing and unmatched in his intellect by any of his peers. How did we repay this national hero ? We chemically castrated him and drove him to suicide, just for being a homosexual. Absolute disgrace and a stain on our history as a nation. He wasn't even granted an official pardon till 2013, some 59 years after his death. At least in 2015, you're free to be gay and not be persecuted for it, so that's progress at least.

It Follows - 8/10
On the face of it, it's just a generic horror which I'm not a fan of, but this has a fair bit of depth to it's story and the cinematography is top notch, gives a really good 70s vibe to it, even though it's contemporarily set.

Now let's hope they can see to it to pardon the rest of those convicted.

The Imitation Game 9/10 and The Theory of Everything 8/10.

Found The Imitation Game the better film but both leads were outstanding and not surprised Redmayne won the Oscar as he was unrecognisable in the later stages. Cumberbatch brilliant as usual but not quite as much of a transformation. I did feel the Theory of Everything had the potential to have the viewpoints a bit biased in places simply as it focused on their marriage but still very good.
