Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I use aero rc with my taranis through a standard usb cable, steam do a version for around £40 up to 100, i have the £100 one and the other versions ommit a few models but im not sure which.

I swear i read that once you have phoenix all updates are free? makes it more sense for that price. On aero rc i use the mt quad copter and it is very fast. obviously it has differences to RL flying and if i could do the things i can in aero in the field it would be insane but a lot of that is my poor eyesight and confidence in not wrecking £400 of gear and/or killing someone or something.

Yeh phoenix updates are free, not sure if I'm going to bother unless I see a copy

I had it before but got rid of it even though its good

There is a really good wireless USB dongle for simulators, you basically plug in a standard receiver in to it and bind your Tx to the receiver. No worry about compatibility with the Tx ports / cables.

Yesterday I spent 2 hours or so on Phoenix RC with FPV & rate. Today I done my first 5 minute flight in rate mode with no crashes and picked it up fairly quickly. I much prefer the feel of rate mode already, doesn't feel like your constantly fighting with it.

Ash what model are you using in Phoenix RC?

Using Blade-MQX cross setup, user uploaded Phantom 1 and also Gaui-330x. Basically I'm flying all the quads that don't have self levelling enabled in game.

If you ever come across a model online that flies anywhere near like a 250 let me know. I have spent some time trying to tweak existing models to be faster and lighter but doesn't seem to make a difference.

Been nice today, so managed to squeeze in 3 flights. Still getting used to the settings for the NAZA regards the battery low voltage warnings. Thinking about an external low voltage alarm instead of using the NAZA.
One worry though, not 5 minutes after landing 2 Tucano trainers flew right overhead at around the same height I had the Hex. Would have made interesting footage on the GoPro!!

Manage to actually get the goggles on today for once. ran 2 battery's los then half way through the third the field emptied of pesky dog walkers, I took the opportunity and whipped the skyzones out of the bag.

Its rough but it is the first time I have actually been able to use them for more than 30s and the sim time helped a little. I'm quite pleased and hope ill make some good progress if I can keep on getting the chance to use them!

I really struggled with the landing, the tilted camera makes it a challenge and I honestly though I was going to lose a ear :D

cool videos

Doing a little fixing on the 250, re-soldering new battery connection wires on and when done strapping them so they cant get yanked.

Re-fixing the rx, relacing a couple of the nylon legs, I dont think im going to use nylon after this, the nylon screws break too easily, I think I may replace them with alu standoffs for legs when I get a chance, fit new props.

I need to find a quick mounting/dismounting position for the FPV gear, for when I want to swap the FPV from the 450 to the 250

Quick 5-6 minute test flight with the 250, slightly worried that its veering off to the right, and possibly because the rear right arm is not level to the rest. Its angled downwards a tiny bit, which means its either not sitting right or its somehow bent

I think my tx/rx stick calibration jyst resolved that though, will test on next flight, also re-calibrated the motors/escs

Also in horizon mode I am struggling to do any rolls or flips at the moment, I managed to do one, but the rest were just not flipping or coming over. Not sure if that was because calibration was out, slightly, I did have a mobius mounted aswel but that shouldnt stop it, or something else

I will post a video in a bit (you can see where it vears off to the right)

I think I need a little more on the breakpoint and the yaw is still a work in progress and proving to be the trickiest to address as I still get overshoot on the hard yaws, this though I have read is hard to tune out on 4s with 5" props and high pitch 6's seem to be the trick.
Im not getting decent range on the video really, around 200m before I get vary bad interference, that may well be down to me flying so close to houses though. The furthest you see me go in the video is the limit before bad breakup occurs, it isn't progressive either it is basically not there then instantly bad.

Paid the duty on my new esc's too, £4 so I'm happy with that. They should be with me Tuesday next week I think they said so I have decided to grab some arm extensions and some 6x45 props and also some 1800mah 4s battery's. working on a new bottom plate to accommodate all the space the battery's will take up so looking foreword to posting up some shots of that as I do it.

Dj, how bad is the bend in the arm?

Thought I would give cleanflight a go on the Naze32 this morning. I flashed to 1.8.0.

I ended up flashing back before even flying, could not get the ESC's to flash on the motor page by upping all the motor speeds plugging in the battery and then dropping speed to 0, this works fine on baseflight. Also with the lost model beeper, every time I flicked the switch on the taranis is just beeped the once no contentious beeping. Another issue I had none of my CLI commands saved, even typing in save and pressing return did nothing.

I would like to use cleanflight so I can make PID adjustments through the taranis, but my first impressions were not great.

To be honest its not a bend, its more that its slighly not aligned with the rest of the arms, but its always been like it, I realised it veering off was the tx was offset to the right. Must have knocked the setting on the radio, I will test it when im out again

Will test it

I tried to correct the arm alignment earlier when I was soldering but its still the same. Tried unscrewing, screwing up again

Video has some close calls, once again, im not usually this bad at flying it

Something does not sound right on that dj, are your props bent at all, do one of the blades lift up higher than the other on one of the props? doesn't have to be a bend in the middle of the blade, a bend at the hub is harder to notice but just as bad. you are getting a lot of vibration, the naze will not cope well with that and it almost sounds like something is loose.

I had a nightmare getting cleanflight to work for me but I got there in the end. Have you tried a different version of cleanflight or reflashing the same one?

Not that iv noticed, the props are fresh on although using stock diatone ones, the mobius is not perm mounted, so a little camera vibration, as I said the one arm is slightly raised, but I cannot find a root cause, that wasnt the reason why its beer veering to the right though.

Hard to explain but see if you can spot it on this pic. I honestly dont see how its doing that, as iv taken it off, put it back on. No different.

Everything was tightened this morning

Going out for another test flight now to see if I have correct the veering to the right issue.

your two main fram plates look off, like the right side has a slightly larger gap that the left, only slightly though. might be the camera angle tbh though. have you trapped a cable?

Edit.

I can confirm that cleanflight 1.8 and 1.8.1Rc is buggy for me too, I calibrated the esc fine but my whole throttle range is form 1900 to 2000 so I have no throttle control at all for 90% of the range. very strange, I would like to use the new releases as they have separated the roll and pitch rate so would be good to mess around with that but besides that nothing realy has any great impact over 1.7.1, I have reflashed that version and all is fine again.

No cables have been trapped, already checked that. Only thing I can think of is the plate manufacturer, one arm might have an extra mm or so thickness or half mm. Causing this issue.

Looking at it with my eyes, 3 arms seem to be pretty much the same thickness wise, and one slightly thicker, so this looks like the cause (possibly)

Just took out for a test flight and after the tx correction its no longer veering right

Good news.

Reflashed cleanflight 1.8 and it is working now after setting the min max values on the throttle and the min command.
