Windows 10

My work laptop is 8.1 and after 2 years I think I can count on 1 hand the amount of times I've actually used the Start Screen for something. Like you everything is either pinned or I just press the Windows key and start typing to search for things.

Another "feature" they ripped off from OS X. ;)

I detest the start screen with a passion. At least it only appears on the screen with the active Window now...

Hmmm I noticed a window icon popped up on Windows 8.1 taskbar.

Never saw that icon before.

I click it right here.

Wow I get Windows 10 reserve. :eek::cool:

Look like Windows 10 RTM is coming much sooner.

does it take you to a link to sign up for the upgrade or does it link to your e mail account when you sign in?

edit! just got the notice on my windows 7 PC as well! lol

Do I really want to reserve an upgrade? I am more than happy with Windows 7 and don't want a change, I certainly don't want the icon/look feel of the metro interface (even with a proper start bar), but I get the feeling that it's the way things are headed and that I'm probably better getting a free copy...

I also wonder if the usual Antitrust brigade will complain to the EU/whoever that Microsoft are offering free upgrades and therefore being anticompetitive, rather than offering links to other o/s as well :p.

Same, wondering whether it's worth installing just to reserve an upgrade. I'm already entitled to a free one on my laptop and phone (W8.1 with Bing, WP8.1 respectively) but my desktop uses a W8.1 license provided through my university (Enterprise I'm guessing) and I'm not sure I'll get a free upgrade with that.

its a free upgrade for the first year so you don't have too if you don't want the upgrade.

don't know if they will charge you after the year or how much

I had to forcefully trigger it on mine.

1) Open the Control Panel, choose Administrative Tools, and then fire up the Task Scheduler.

2) Expand Task Scheduler Library, then Microsoft, then Windows, and finally scroll down to expand Setup

3) Click the folder GWXTriggers and on the far right hit Run.

Just reserved. Noticed it's "..free for the first year."

Does that mean they are switching to a subscription type service like Adobe? It obviusly means there will be some kind of charge after the year, anyone know the details?

no...

it means the offer ends after a year. so if you don't grab it in the first year you'll have to pay

I only want it for DX12, but i'm also very worried what an upgrade like this will break in the process. I can imagine having so many issues that a full, clean install will be needed.

Any good reasons to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7? Pretty happy with 7, I actually uninstalled 8.1 to go back to 7 as well.

Not sure I want all the skydrive built in and other metro stuff

On my main PC I had no problem with the registration but I have two other PC's with registered copies of Windows 8.1 associated with the same email address. Trying on one of them I can't get the system tray icon and process to run, even using your method or the other one to launch the GWX.exe directly.

I imagine that could be due to those accounts being tied to the same email address and not the separate serial number for each copy of Windows 8...?
