My work laptop is 8.1 and after 2 years I think I can count on 1 hand the amount of times I've actually used the Start Screen for something. Like you everything is either pinned or I just press the Windows key and start typing to search for things.
Do I really want to reserve an upgrade? I am more than happy with Windows 7 and don't want a change, I certainly don't want the icon/look feel of the metro interface (even with a proper start bar), but I get the feeling that it's the way things are headed and that I'm probably better getting a free copy...
I also wonder if the usual Antitrust brigade will complain to the EU/whoever that Microsoft are offering free upgrades and therefore being anticompetitive, rather than offering links to other o/s as well.
Just reserved. Noticed it's "..free for the first year."
Does that mean they are switching to a subscription type service like Adobe? It obviusly means there will be some kind of charge after the year, anyone know the details?
no...
it means the offer ends after a year

I had to forcefully trigger it on mine.
1) Open the Control Panel, choose Administrative Tools, and then fire up the Task Scheduler.
2) Expand Task Scheduler Library, then Microsoft, then Windows, and finally scroll down to expand Setup
3) Click the folder GWXTriggers and on the far right hit Run.
