*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Noooo, just spent over an hour in a combat zone, went to jump out and its been sat there with the wibbly "engage" screen on for the last 5 minutes :'( closed down, trying to launch again and its telling me it cant talk to the transaction server...

Ah I see, thought you had some insider knowledge there for a minute :p

If anybody is interested I aim to stream my first fumblings with the Horizons beta on Tuesday when I get home from work around 10.30pm, expect lots of insurance payouts :D

Just out of interest, will you be able to steal other players ships, say theres a few of you landed on a planet and your off in your buggy things, whats to stop someone driving up your ramp or whatever...
If the ship you have stolen gets destroyed then you automatically end up somewhere else in something else but I think it should be something thats do'able..

Don't think so, there is going to be hacking of installations at some point but I'm not sure we will be able to steal other peoples ships, they'll take off and go into orbit once you are a certain distance away, would be quite cool though.

Well as much as Horizons sounded ace, I've really not been excited so far by any of the videos or images I've seen yet for it. It's Elite!? Not too interested in racing a buggy around a brown moon.
Frontier and First Encounters had you landing on interesting (albeit a pallet shift) alien planets. They had "futuristic" alien cities. It might have ust ben the same buildings re-arranged, but imagination based on Assimov could fill in the blanks. Cities in which to trade or pick up missions. But racing/dodging a buggy over a brown moon is what I've seen as the highlight, and it's a bit of a let down.
The ships are gorgeous. I *love* the plastic interior of the hauler. It's perfect as a cheap space van. There is so much atmosphere that is amazing. So much I want to love. I spent so many hours playing Frontier on the Amiga, and ED looks how I dreamed of it looking. But I'm not loving Horizons. Not yet anyay.
Please Frontier Developments, please please please, bring back the imagination to Elite. Don't just bring in buggy racing for a year of content.

I think the 1st iteration of horizons is just the start. I agree that a bit of buggy racing is not going to cut it (still fun though). But imagine when they introduce atmospheres and lifeforms - it will come and it will be amazing !

In the meantime, it adds to the universe and it takes away the limitation of of just bouncing off planets.

Haven't played Elite for a couple of months but started playing it quite a bit in the last week or two.

I'd love to see a NPC wing system where you could hire wingmen and issue orders like the old freespace games. "Red-1 attack my target, Red-2 attack my attacker" etc. That would add a lot as well.

Twice last night I fell into the trap of 'just one more bounty'. Had over a million each time to hand in and lost them both  I'm an idiot.

i gave up the whole bounty hunting combat thing for money making. gone back to trading. 1.6mill every 15mins now 2 jump trade route. :)

Boring as hell but good money and can watch a film on the 2nd monitor whilst doing it.

Rail guns. Cobras have them too, usually the 'Deadly' variety. They don't bloody miss either.
These were definitely Plasma Accelerators. We checked!
Things have been better lately, but still getting hit from 4.2km by lasers, when our own lasers (Huge) are out of range... something definitely screwy.

Are you sure you are in a res... I made a similar mistake in a combat zone... Thought I was in a res , didn't pick a side and as soon as I fired I had everyone on me and dead in about 10secs!!!
I'm ranked Dangerous, have been playing since Beta and have been using this same RES (the only one in the whole system) as my primary hunting ground for almost a whole year now... plus it is a ringed planet which has a bunch of ships all mining, the cops come help me out and it even says "High Intensity Resource Extraction Site" in big letters - I am VERY sure!! ;)

They have already stated that planetary landings will *begin* with planets that have no atmosphere.
It makes sense to thus limit it, allowing the universe to develop in time. These starter planets will eventually be terraformed, built upon, exploited and developed... and if you're into trading, you get to ship all the stuff to them... or protect them if you're a combateer.... or even rob them, if you're a pirate.
You could even prevent them from terraforming and help seize the planet in the name of the Federation/Empire/Alliance/whoever you serve.

Give it time...

You said it yourself, would you accept a simple palette shift in this day and age? Nope, thus these things will take time. If Horizons is just doing illegal racing around installations then I'd be amazed.

As I said I hadn't played for about 4 months. Started up again a couple of weeks ago.

Currently in my mostly A grade python doing PvE in High Res. Making about 5 or 6million an hour. FAR FAR more fun than grinding a triangle route in a Type9 for similar money.

Ranking up in a faction that rewards bounties (Zachary for example) helps a lot as well.

Some of those structures on the surface are starports, so you'll at least be able to land and do business. If you want you'll be able to hop into an SRV and go exploring. There are a couple of things that we know of that you can do in your SRV:

1. Base raids. Take down skimmers, destroy generators, hack data links in order to get into a base where you'll (presumably) be able to find canisters or complete missions. If you're in a wing you can take on these bases both on the ground and with air support.

2. Materials. Horizons 2.0 will bring in the concept of 'materials' which is the precursor to a full loot/craft system. These materials allow you to synthesise ammunition, to give your FSD a boost, etc. To find them, you'll need to use your SRV and its wave scanner to locate them.

There will apparently be other things to find, and there's supposedly content for miners in Horizons also. We also know that later in the season there'll be multicrew, avatar creation (for use with multicrew), looting and crafting, deployable fighters and supposedly a lot more that hasn't been announced yet.

To me it all sounds hugely promising. But I can understand the point-of-view that you might want to hold off until you've seen more.

Are combat zones still good for making money?

If you can stay there for a decent spell they are. The last couple I have entered, the red sticks far outweigh the green sticks and I can't last for too long before having to leg it. I find High Intensity Res Sites are the money spinners now.
