1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Just grabbed a X5660 to replace my 920 and so far at stock im happy, got it for £55.

Its so much cooler than the i7, idle sits at about 17c-24c using my Noctua D14 which is insane since my i7 was sitting at 45-50c.

Is it rather easy to get a small overclock on these? I dont need the crazy clocks some people need but was thinking maybe 3.4ghz as a start.

Also im running it on a Gigabyte UD5 rev 1 on the latest bios.

Just go straight in at 4ghz, it'll do that easily.

I'll second that. I couldn't get past 3.8Ghz on my 920 but my x5650 went to 4Ghz and in doing so I didn't have one failure as I stepped up. I'm pretty sure I could go easily to 4.4 but stopped at 4 as it's as much as I want / need and it's so stable.

My observations on temp are the same. I'm sitting at 19 degrees 20 mins after booting with one core @ 9.

I understand it will do 4ghz but tbh I just dont need it and would prefer cooler temps, longer life and cheaper running costs.

Is there a sort of rough guide hidden in this thread on how to get a modest 300-500mhz overclock on these chips?

You won't notice a 300mhz overclock and you won't shorten the life going for 4ghz. You won't notice a power difference either really.

If you just want 3.3 I suspect putting the bclk to 150 and leaving everything else would work

Considering one of these CPUs for a home server. What Motherboard do people recommend - cheaper the better ! :)

There are some cheapish x58 server boards on the bay...No overclocking but fine for a server...

TBH

There are now lower power cpu's for a server build for home...The xeon is really a cheap upgrade path for people already on X58:)
