1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Thanks, AiiR. Daft question perhaps, but moving from a 920 D0 to a Xeon 5650, will that require a reformat and reinstall of OS?

Cool, cheers. I think I'm gonna grab one just out of curiosity. My little 920 D0 has been sat at @4.0Ghz for the past few years and never missed a beat but this 6 core shenanigans is tempting me.

I'm running an Asus P6X58D-E, I take it that this mobo will be fine with a 6 core Xeon?

I'm using this exact board, no problem at all.

Nice. Made a 'Best Offer' to a seller on eBay of £55, but he's sticking at £65 (+£3.40 P&P) for an X5650. Is that a bit pricey, going by what some of you guys said you managed to pick one up for?

That's good to know. What BIOS are you running on it and have you over clocked it? If so, what settings have you tweaked in the BIOS to get to where it's sat?
If no one beats me to it i'll post up some bios pics tonight as i run the Asus P6X58D-E. Running on the 'latest' bios which was from 2012 lol. Ran a 930 @ 4.2 before swapping to a x5650 again at 4.2 but it would run at 4.4 but happier running 24/7 at 4.2 again so backed off a little and the temps barely get hot compared to the i7.

Rig has been going since 2010 so no issues with longevity and easily my best ever value purchase!

Cheers dude, that would be good. I'm running the 0303 BIOS from 2010 apparently. Had a quick look at the Asus support page for the board, does anyone know why most of the BIOS updates are around 1.04Mb but the latest one at the top shows its 247Mb? Seems a bit of a strange difference in size?

They were £50-60 when they first started appearing. Doesn't surprise me that they've gone up since the demand will have risen a bit. That said, I'm sure you can find one for less if you are willing to wait.

Yeah, I'm in no rush so I'll hang fire a wee bit. Do these Xeons play nice with 16Gb of RAM running in Flex mode on the Asus boards?

Bit much for a 5650, depends how urgently you want it. £55 is about right.

Do we know if a Rampage 2 extreme supports the xeons? There's one for sale for quite cheap for an x58 board, but states it was found in the cellar but was stored all boxed and wrapped and no visible damage to pins but selling it as spares and repairs as they're not sure if it works or not, they can't test it, so not sure if its a punt I'm willing to take.

It contains raid drivers hence the size, you don't need to install them though.

For the sake of £5 - 10 just buy the chip lol. If it runs for the next year it'll of costs you pennies per day even if you're 'overpaying' ;).

Not sure what you mean by Flex mode but I'll be converting from 6 GB triple channel to 16 GB dual channel tomorrow. I don't anticipate any issues...

Check THIS THREAD I started a ages ago on the subject, most X58 based systems can run in 'Flex Mode' with 4 sticks of RAM fitted which gives you Triple Channel mode as normal for the first three sticks and the 4th stick runs in a type of single channel mode. There are images in the above thread describing it and what slots the RAM sticks need to go in.

Also works with 5 sticks too altho never heard it called 'flex' mode before!
