1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Guys anyone using an asus board tell me what the qpi/dram voltage they are using ? or any idea what it should be i currently have it @ 1.3v:)
Yep I am running 1.3 V too. Couldn't be bothered to spend ages finding the lowest stable value, 1.3 V seems sensible and is stable so I stuck with that.

Considering one of these CPUs for a home server. What Motherboard do people recommend - cheaper the better ! :)
If you don't already have an X58 motherboard, don't bother. Unless you really need more than 8 virtual cores, a modern Core i7 would be a better choice. Hell, my file server is running a Celeron.

Guys, quick question. I'm currently running a 920 D0 @4ghz on a P6X58D-E mobo with 16gb Corsair Vengeance and a GTX760. Does everything I need it too even though it's an old rig. But now and again when this Xeon thread pops up it gets me wondering! What difference does a Xeon make to real world performance? I use the system mainly for web development and design running CS6 and a bit of gaming now and again.

Ta.

if you are doing a lot of CPU intense stuff a Xeon will help a lot.

the Xeon has 6 cores and 12 threads so for video editing etc it will help, below taken from the intel page vs the usual 4 cores and 8 threads

Performance
# of Cores 6
# of Threads 12
Processor Base Frequency 2.66 GHz
Max Turbo Frequency 3.06 GHz
TDP 95 W

Cool, just wondered what all the fuss was about really. I don't do video editing and what image manipulation I do with PS, Fireworks and Illustrator isn't too intense. I believe most games these days currently only use 2 or 4 cores so I can't see it making any difference for gaming. The added benefits in relation to TDP and power usage would be nice but then my little 920 D0 sits nicely at 35-39 deg during general use so its doing not bad at that.

Only reason I'm really asking is that I've already got the expensive part of the jigsaw, namely the 1366 motherboard - the 5650's themselves seem to be fairly reasonably priced and availability seems ok too. :)

Yeah, the 5650 can be picked up for around £60 which if you have the stuff already is a good upgrade which doesn't cost a lot

I went from a 920, and everything just feels a bit smoother when you have multiple windows open or alt tab out of a game etc. Even if you aren't a heavy multitasking uset, you can't argue with an extra 2 hyperthreaded cores for around 50 quid. You could get 20 for your 920 easily.

I might give one a pop then. I notice a seller currently on the Bay of 'E's' selling them for about £60 - he has 60 of them for sale!!

The advert states they are :-

Have a quick look for buy it nows with a best offer option, I picked up this X5660 last week for £55 even though it was listed for £75 + it had free P&P.

A lot of people seem to throw a bunch of these chips up in groups of 6/8/10 which to me looks like they shifted a few servers and want to get rid of the old stock quickly.

Always nice to get a few extra £ off ;)

Cool, cheers. I think I'm gonna grab one just out of curiosity. My little 920 D0 has been sat at @4.0Ghz for the past few years and never missed a beat but this 6 core shenanigans is tempting me.

I'm running an Asus P6X58D-E, I take it that this mobo will be fine with a 6 core Xeon?

Yup, update the bios with your 920 in then away you go. If your i7 is a 4GHz, the Xeon should do 4.4+ with ease.
