It would be a waste of die space and unnecessary cost to Nvidia. The hypothetical 1080ti/GP102 products will either both feature 12GB ram as standard (and implement other differentiators) or otherwise let the Titan consumer demographic eat the cost of 24GB for any Titan product based on a 384bit die.
-Part of the reason I think it more likely, is that if there next GPU does turn out to use gddr5x, subsequent HBM large die GPU's can target 16GB.

I think the stability of the used 980Ti prices is going to depend a lot on the 1070's pricing and performance.
And not just the Founder's Edition. People right now are far too impatient in seeing how the 3rd party cards are going to be priced and how they perform. Of course knee-jerk reactions seem like the 'standard' nowadays, though.

As you can tell my resistance is going to be paper thin so I'm hoping for lots of support to hold off being an early adopter this time!!!

It won't be OCUK who include the freebies, that will come from Nvidia... and it will happen, but not immediately. Give it a couple of months and you'll get a free game or two bundled with the new cards. What seems uncertain is how long it will actually be before we see the FULL line-up of cards across the 1070/1080 range, including the AIB offerings and their prices. The sum total of what we don't know is more than what we do right now, so definitely worth holding on until we get the full picture. The worst thing you could do is buy into the hype and pre-order a 1080 the moment they become available... that's what they are counting on. The smart ones will wait.
If peeps are looking for a good deal on a good Graphics card just buy a S/H 980ti for £300 or two for sil @ £600 and they will wipe the floor with a 1080.
I've not seen any go for £300. Most are going for £380 - £400 S/H
I can't see myself getting involved until I see this throttling by design understood and reported back by real users using real set-ups.

already got 2 evga 980ti hybrids i wont be moving till the ti version of the 1080 comes out

Well, given the lowest price on on OC is £489.99, paying £400 for SH is absolutely daft. You don't even know if the warranty is really worth anything on change of hands, that alone has gone to be worth -£80 or more, without considering it also being a used part and all the associated risks of buying SH. I'd rather stump up another £89.99 to get brand new with a full warranty.
I reckon some of the same people who complain about 1080 pricing are those that pay daft prices for used goods

This, 384bit with 14Gb/s micron chips gives exactly twice the bandwidth of the 1080. The Ti and Titan doesn't need twice the bandwidth, so nvidia could use slower 12 or 13Gb/s chips and have plenty of bandwidth.

The most intriguing unknown is going to be the performance and price of the 1070 vs the 980Ti. All this 1080 hype is masking that question right now, but the answer could be HUGELY significant and have a big impact on second hand values of pretty much everything! Anyone on the upgrade fence should definitely hold fire and see how things pan out...

We pretty much already know. The 1070 is going to be in the ball park of 980Ti performance stock for stock (you just have to look at the specs) and will likely start at £320+ once the release/founders nonsense is over.

Just trying to remember what happened way back in the 600 series when the first titan showed up, because I think a similar thing could happen this time around. The 680 was the top single gpu for the series, and they delayed the 700 series and instead released the titan and charged stupid money just because they could.
The 1080 might be on top for a while, and when the next top Nvidia gpu comes along everyone will be disappointed because they were expecting a reasonably priced ti, but the next titan will show up instead for megabucks.

Ballpark yes, but specifics will be key in determining which way people go, and more importantly the price. I do feel £320 is VERY optimistic though, especially in light of the 1080 pricing. Nvidia seem to have positioned the 1080 in the 980Ti price tier (not the 980 as many say it should be), so I expect the 1070 to be closer to 980 pricing than 970, but we shall see. I hope I'm wrong on that, but it does seem they've rejigged their whole line-up to maximise profits rather than offer great value.

I feel a bit suspicious why there's less known about the 1070, they're either keeping quiet because it's going to be far-and-away the best VFM and absolutely clean up, or they're worried about it.
Going back to those Titan/Ti specs - I wonder this time around if they're going to make a bigger gap between Titan and the Ti to make the extra MSRP viable? I would certainly consider the extra cost of a Titan if it was an absolute beast compared to the Ti.

Nah, given the pricing of the 1080 vs the announced $ prices a week or so ago, if the 1070 was announced between $300 - $370 which I think it was(non-FE vs FE) then we should be looking at ££320 - 350ish for the 1070 FE. Seems a bit cheap though if its only 20-30% slower but you always pay a premium for the top end and bear in mind the new memory type on the 1080.
1070 will be where the value for £ is at then and x 2 should be great for £640
