Xbox Scorpio

True enough :)

The sentiment still stands though. Microsoft need to make clear that the Scorpio hardware isn't meant to be used to create visually stunning games at ~1080p. Doing so would effectively start a new generation, as the Scorpio would quickly leave the Xbox One behind.

The intention is Xbox One level visuals at 4K (or, I guess, 1080p VR).

Note sure what confusion there is.

Devs will just dev Dynamic Resolution to the next level for Scorpio, like playing Halo 5 on the Scorpio will play it maxed at 1080p 60fps.
Halo 6 may well be full blast at 4k 60fps, but will be Dynamic on the One.

THey might push 4k on VR, but really VR is about a good 90/120 fps so it doesn't mangle your head.

Its just like where you have resolution settings on a pc, its the same game you can just change the res to either 4k or 1080p (in this case its decided by which console you put the game in). The graphics don't change as in you suddenly get batman smoke (lol) just everything looks crisper etc.

You can test it now, just change your monitor from 1080p to 720p (or below) while a games running and that's what you'll get albeit with 1080-4K.

Scorpio will not have the grunt to render visually stunning games at 4K - or UHD should we say. It will most likely be upscaled from a lower res like 1080 or 1440 but I doubt it. My guess is 1080.

Either that or it does render the game at 4K and the other graphical features will suffer so the game will look bland as ****.

Anyone remember the days during its development, the PS3 graphics were said to be "photo realistic". Yeah ok  Same thing will happen here, the Scorpio - and the PS Neo - will be so leet and amazing looking blah blah blah.

It will be better than the current consoles but don't expect miracles, neither console is going to have high end hardware in a little box that sits under your telly. If you want high end hardware now you'd have to spend thousands on a top notch PC to run games at 4K at least 60fps and still keep all the other graphics features enabled or 'maxed'.

A console costing a few hundred quid can not do this.

Who said it's going to cost a few hundred quid?

People have become so jaded as a whole, it's really disappointing. Yes I know companies have taken liberties in the past but why not give them a chance to redeem themselves?

Update seems to paint a different picture to what he actually said:

Speaking in the video (below), Spencer explained that Scorpio is a "6 teraflop gaming machine, which will be a great gaming machine for true 4K gaming, giving you a native 4K frame buffer so you can see games in all their beauty.

"Or," he continued, "if developers want to use those 6 teraflops in other ways they're free to do that."

Spencer's comments suggest that developers may be able to use Scorpio's additional power to deliver more visually impressive games at a lower resolution, rather than be forced to render at native 4K.

There will also be no Scorpio exclusive titles.

Its going to cost at least £500-£600, can't see it being much more if they want to sell loads.

Oh well. Whatever happens, I'll probably get both. I'm not going back to PC gaming again. I'm just happy that all the games are backwards and forwards compatible so I can continue to build a nice digital library.

So can you get 1080p TVs that do HDR now? I thought they were only for 4K sets? If it's the latter then the Xbox One S HDR stuff you won't see unless you're on a 4K TV with HDR.

Correct. And then the game has to be HDR compatible as well. Gears 4 is the first of these games on Xbox One.

So just a few comments without reading all the posts so sorry if it's been covered.

From my understanding Project Neo from Sony is releasing in September while Scorpio from Microsoft is last quarter of 2017.

Project Neo specs are pretty much confirmed as the developers already have their Dev kits and have confirmed as such with it noted that the CPU although clocked higher by around 500Mhz is the same. Then the GPU appears to be a AMD 480x clocked at 911Mhz and around 4.3TFLOPs.

In comparison the rumour and mentioned figures are that the Scorpio will com with 6TFLOPs and currently unknown CPU. May well be waiting for AMD's next gen to hit.

With all that noted I don't see the Scorpio giving much/if any change from £600 tbh. The equivalent PC with similar specs would be around £600-£700

Internet says Zen CPU and Polaris GPU combo. I still think anything more than £499 is nuts. You want an incentive for people to buy the console rather than a PC.

EDIT: It supposedly has 12GB RAM. Digital Foundry came to this conclusion from the screenshot of the motherboard in the trailer. Phil Spencer said "Very good" without denying or confirming it.

forza 6 apex now on pc

Ideal (4K at 60 fps):
OS: Windows 10 64-bit version 1511 CPU: Intel Core i7-6700k @ 4 Ghz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980ti or Radeon Fury X
HDD: SSD + 30 GB
RAM: 16 GB
VRAM: 6+ GB

the above spec for 4k 60fps on forza 6 not that bad, must be what Microsoft are talking about

First 180 already? Not surprised, his earlier comment was poorly thought out - true 4k seems improbable outside graphically simpler games.

180 in what way?

I think he was fairly clear in saying any game released for XBox will run on any of the current Xbox family with appropriate enhancements (+HDR for XB1s and +4K for Scorpio). He also said they don't force the resolution so devs could choose to use the extra power to enhance the graphics in a manner other than pure resolution (which arguably could produce even better results than just a pure resolution bump). That doesn't preclude 4K or even suggest 4K games will have to be "graphically simpler".

More interestingly he says Scorpio is designed specifically with 4K gaming in mind and to get a feeling for what they wanted to achieve they started with Forza 6 Apex at 4K on Windows 10 PC as a starting point for power required which if you've seen Forza Apex at 4k I think you'd struggle to justify saying

Unless of course you're suggesting Forza 6 Apex on PC at 4K is a "graphically simpler game"?

Perhaps I'm easily pleased I suppose...
