Xbox Scorpio

I made the decision a while ago that this last set of consoles will be my last (Xbone, PS4 & Wii U). I also have a Mini-ITX HTPC under my TV and with this news it just makes sense to go PC only, I will struggle when it comes to Nintendo and Sony exclusives though but I am determined!

Nintendo + half decent gaming PC is my choice. It works in harmony perfectly, those Nintendo exclusives and some high res/decent texture gaming.

I won a PS4 in a raffle, I sold it for far cheaper than it was worth because it was pointless. The only game I wanted was Uncharted and I couldn't justify a console for one game.

Kinda torn atm. I was all over this announcement and was like "yup day one for me"

But the more I think about it the idea of a Neo and high end PC is more tempting.

Also I kinda have to echo other people point about rez.

I'm not really bothered. I just want games that look like Ubisoft games before the downgrades!!!!!!!!

Well it leaves me in a bit of a quandry, was saving for a GTX1080 and was toying with the idea of getting an Xbox but this Scorpio could change things. They will not do 4k 60FPS natively, not a chance.. high end GPUs now can't do that. However if it can do an upscaled 4k with a genuine improvement in graphics this changes PC market as finally the console market is not bottle necking the industry (so to say).

So if the Scorpio can perform at Upscaled 4k the PC industry will be working on a GPU being able to smash 4k natively and finally we will see a big race for the best 4k performing platform. This leads me to think a GTX1080 has come at a bit of an odd time as this will no doubt be outdone very soon.

Now another thought is why not just market this as a whole new console? Not a "bigger brother" to the XBone! Otherwise surely it will forever be held back by the XBone. Always felt the XBone was perhaps not needed, yes it did offer an upgrade in performance but think I could have lived with a 360 until a Scorpio... it feels as though this generation is almost a "fill the void".

So what do I do? Wait for a Scorpio and see what GPUs come out nearer the time, my thoughts are to get an XBone Slim and just wait on the "next gpu". Although doing the latter may seem abit odd, surely they would have killed XBone sales with the announcement of something is in the pipeline?

that would be extremely bad marketing, and there's no reason. games will be able to run on any windows system due to UWP. so they'll only be held back if programmers design it to be held back.

Might as well go and buy that PC I've been saying I'd buy for the past 12 months if MS are near on making all their games work on both PC and X1....

Use the PS4 for the console sofa gaming, PC for xbox exclusives and all other high end gaming.

Ironic that Sony say NEO is to stop gamers jumping to PC, yet I feel having both a PC and PS4 is now looking to be the perfect gaming setup, as both offer everything..

I actually do not see any reason to buy an X1 or newer console that is xbox branded if you have a PS4 and don't mind having a PC as well.

Doubt it. They would have been working on Scorpio since the Xbone launched with its computational deficit. The Neo is probably more to do with PS VR, not Nintendo.

If they had been working on the Scorpio for that long, then they'd have more to say and/or show by now, plus it wouldn't be releasing a year and a half from now. Perhaps they've been working on it for a year extra, but probably not since the launch of the XB1. Otherwise they've been sitting around doing nothing all these years, considering what little they had to show and tell at E3.

What, three? Hardly difficult compared to the multitude of PC configurations.

I'll admit, you're right on that one and considering Microsoft's choice to include PC now, it doesn't change that much for them. However, a good many developers are very used to developing only for a single Xbox and all of a sudden they've now got to make their games work on more variations of hardware.

Other developers like DICE and Ubisoft will have no problem since they make multiplatform releases anyway. But devs like 343i who have only been making games for one spec of hardware at a time will have a harder time to adjust.

Not that it can't be done, but it does mean games like Halo will take a bit more time perhaps.

I guess the fact that MS are now truly embracing the PC and having the Xboxes as non-PC options makes things easier for many of us. Just have a PC and be done with it. Or have an XB1 now and upgrade to a Scorpio later if you can't get a good enough PC.

Nintendo + half decent gaming PC is my choice. It works in harmony perfectly, those Nintendo exclusives and some high res/decent texture gaming.

I'd have to mostly agree. Nintendo exclusives are many and can't be found anywhere else (unless you emulate ;P). Up until recently the big ones have been guaranteed to be good (RIP Star Fox Zero). That was my set-up before buying a PS4 last year. Granted I've not yet opened it or used it, but there's a fair few exclusives besides Uncharted to play on it, which I plan on buying sometime soon. Like Bloodborne, Ratchet and Clank, among others.

If MS is targeting the Scorpio at only those who have 4k TVs and a lot of money, they've shot themselves in the foot, yet again. Not many people have a 4k TV now and I doubt that many will in the future. However, 4k monitors are increasing in popularity (are way cheaper and usually have more game-centric features) and PCs are becoming more 4k capable... I bet many folks would rather just get a PC capable of 4k. The average console buyer is unlikely to have a 4kTV/monitor and be willing to cough up the extra cash for the hardware itself. If it's just for 4k, they won't sell too many at first. The PSNEO and NX will sell more since more people will be able to get a lot out of it.

Granted the Scorpio can be used by those who want that 1080p60fps in Xbox One titles, but I think the titles have to support it first. They might be on fixed specs where Scorpio only does certain combinations of resolution and framerate. Not to mention that apparently the Xbox One Slim has just a tad more power than the XB1 itself, helping to stabilise some framerates. Only benchmarks at release will tell if it's actually a tangible benefit though.

Perhaps the XB1 Slim will do very well and the Scorpio won't?

My complaint is that they announced way too early. I'd raher have them do it like the XB1/XB1S announcement, where they can actually show off the machine and give a proper release date fairly soon. They shouldn't have mentioned it, they already have the Xbox One Slim for hardware this year. Leave Scorpio for next year's E3.

Mark Cerny had been working on the PS4 for six years before they announced it in February 2013. As soon as one console is out the door, work starts on designing the next one.

Well that is correct, they start working on newer consoles soon as one is out the door, plus the work to improve on the OS etc... so work never really stops on the current or even newer model, even the PS3 was being well supported until recently so I do agree with this..

I however do feel now its been mentioned that Nintendo have the biggest challenge. I owned a Wii U and found the machine to be fun for a while but the whole social and third party was totally lacking and it most certainly killed my enjoyment of the machine greatly. Cause this is IMO but I wasn't the only one. I sold the machine before I lost too much money on it, and stuck to PS4 and recently got a second hand X1 both of which are vastly better then what the Wii U had to offer.

Whilst MS can make sales on either xlive or Windows 10 stores and even still make money on hardware, and Sony doesn't seem to do badly with PSN and their strategy, does make me think where does this leave Nintendo?

Nintendo without a shadow off a doubt has the best exclusive. There is nothing quiet like Mario out there that can sell consoles all on its own. The new Zelda looks amazing, I will always have a soft spot for Smash Bros. More then any other console the exclusives make Nintendo consoles.

I almost read that as a fanboy comment. But the funny thing is it's actually rather true. So far, Nintendo's strength has been exclusive games and it's weakness the very lacking third-party multi-platform titles. On the other hand, that's where the XB1 and PS4 excel, they're great for the multiplatform like Battlefront and Mortal Kombat, but their exclusives are lacking in number and sometimes appeal.

Though now PS4 is starting to ramp things up and churn out exclusives, whilst Xbox has gone the opposite route and has dropped exclusivity entirely (all it's games are on PC too now).

Anyhow I guess I'm wrong on the 'how long it takes to develop a console' thing. But... it was still a major mistake for Microsoft to mention the Scorpio at this year's E3, instead of keeping hush about it. Niche or not, a lot of people wil hold of on buying an XB1 now, intending to wait for news of the Scorprio or the release of it itself.

disagree, if they did that ps4 neo will come out start of next year and everyone will buy, they needed to stop public jumping to neo and wait for scorpio

i can't see why anyone will buy a neo on launch when they know six month later you can buy a xbox with a better spec.

xbox S was great timing, massive game dropping support for xbox 360 and ps3 support, gave public something to think about instead of buying ps4

Well he was right, Nintendo have some fantastic exclusives but as I mentioned, they have a big challenge as they need to recapture a lot of lost ground after the Wii U.

I think one the biggest hurdles for any xbox console now is reason to buy one if you like PC gaming and own a PS4 or even a Nintendo console, as these two machines are clearly romping ahead with fine exclusives whereas MS have decided to embrace both console and on the go gaming in the form of UWP, and allowing their franchises to appear on PC.

I think MS just want folks into the whole UWP eco system and are prepared to do it anyway they can, and not that they don't care about console gamers, they are about to provide some good spec'd console hardware for those that don't want a PC, but on the other hand, they are now about to provide PC owners to play Forza if they have the hardware already and not forcing them to buy a console to do so..

it has to be a huge win win for both console and PC fans alike. Leaving Sony and Nintendo to drive sales with exclusive content.

So what if the NEO comes out at £399 tomorrow and then the Scorpio comes out next year at £499?

Why should a hardcore gamer wait? I wouldn't. Anyone looking to buy the NEO is a hardcore gamer, and they will know all they need to know, and many will buy one to taken advantage of its performance increases. In fact i'd not buy a Scorpio and 100% buy a NEO knowing what is going on as I know I can build a capable PC today to play all of the games coming out at better res and fps then a standard X1 right now.

But I can't play Horizon Zero Dawn or God of War in PC. That is a fact.

PC games could go straight on xbox without little problems, allow xbox to access much bigger game library

sure saw something about playing old classic console games on xbox one now working (could work)

If they do get older games from the xbox library working on PC that would be a killer feature - and be a damn good reason to get a decent PC. the idea of xbox exclusives, older xbox titles all with using your xbox profile and being able to play against your friends regardless of if on an X1 console or PC is an amazing thought.

As for playing PC games on a X1 console, that could work like something Steam has done with in home streaming, but I somehow don't see it working native. so you'd need a PC to stream the games to the console anyhow, so might as well just stick to a PC.

What if scorpio comes out at same price as neo with twice the power, its all if and buts. I can't see why you rush out and buy a neo when you don't need one (if you got ps4 already)

xbox games on pc, i can only see being a good thing, bigger player base and allows players to play together.

Why don't sony release it games on PC? Are they being greedy by forcing public to buy console? Not hard to convert games to pc now.

But the whole point of exclusives is to sell consoles, accessories, PS+ subscriptions and more games/media. Sony wants people to buy into the PlayStation ecosystem and spend money there.
