It performs in DX11 somewhere between a 970 (worst case) and 390X (best case).

Crazily, the believers here are still saying it could match a 980ti :p Just needs the "lazy devs" to use DX12 "properly", and bingo, AMD will turn an overpriced low end card into a 980ti killer :p

Or so the story goes....

The 760 was also $250, 660 was $230. The 960 was probably the slowest x60 card ever relative to x70, there's a reason why it was so cheap. The 970 was 50-60% faster than the 960, this time round the 1070 is supposed to be more like 30-35% faster.

Look, no one is happy about paying more, but short of moving to the US I don't really see that we have a choice. It's either that or drop down a tier to the 1050/470.
 
I know this is an enthusiast's forum, but even by those lofty standards the 480 can't seriously be considered a "low-end" GPU.

Having been interested in the 4GB 480 but initially put-off by the power issues and lack of availability, I'm now watching the 1060 closely but I get the impression it's going to be significantly more expensive and I'll probably end up with a 480 anyway.

In that example and others yes as many reviews have shown. It is also still available to buy for anyone who wants one too over these newer cards.
How much faster will the 1060 be compared to some of the later 970 OC models might be surprising too. Just like how a 980ti compares to a newer 1070.

You have to consider the new features and evaluate everything not just frame-rates or just DX11 anymore.

I'm saying that a GPU that provides competent framerates at 1920x1080 in current games isn't low-end. I'm not really sure what you think deriding it or the people who don't have £500 for a GPU will actually achieve.

Sorry but I class them like this (But everyone got there own way ;) )

GTX 970 = low range
GTX 980 = mid range
GTX 980ti = high end
GTX titan x = very high end (or ultra high end )

But I guess you could class them like this

GTX 970 = mid range
GTX 980 = high end
GTX 980ti = very high end
GTX titan x = ultra high end

The bottom list is how Nvidia and just about everyone else would class them.

So where does the 950 and 960 come into your own classification? non-existent?
 
NV internally classifies them as 70/80 mid by the chip numbers.

Only 80 card you might could've called high end was the 780 built off GK110.

All I know is I'll never fall for the fake high end meme.
 
The Zotac looks nice and meaty as always although very similar to their previous 960.

Less than 4% overclock out of box is a bit low for such a substantial looking card.
Possible Amp Extreme version yet to come or unlikely?

I mean, the RX480 matches a Titan X in Quantum Break while sustaining 50% higher framerates than a 970 during all action, it's also 30% faster than the 970 in Hitman... but there is basically absolutely no basis to believe it's faster when optimised properly.... none at all, not even a hint in any currently shipping game at all.

For the record, I've never seen anyone anywhere claim it will consistently match a 980ti, not a single person.

I saw some people myself included who said in DX12 and a lot of upcoming games the STOCK card could be significantly ahead of 980 and overclocked AIB cards could come close to 980ti level..... with the massive lead the RX480 has on a 970/980 at stock in multiple DX12 titles already and being so ridiculously close to the Titan X in Quantum Break, it's not exactly a stretch to think that in several DX12 titles the AIB/oc'd RX480 will indeed get around 980ti performance, not least because there is literally already one game out in which that is true when using a mild overclock on a reference card.

It's also worth remembering the past 2-3 weeks sensibly. The WCCF rumours came out saying 1266Mhz stock, AIB oc/d cards capable of hitting 1400Mhz + and at that point the general feeling on forums was that OC'd versions IF they get that higher could compete with a 980ti, maybe people didn't say it in every post, because we've all been saying it for the past year, but this was always considered to be for DX12 games.

Then Gibbo said this card won't match a 980ti, and all of a sudden everyone as acting like everyone was talking about a stock RX480 matching a 980ti in everything...... this never happened(except in Humbug's head).
