Don't worry if you get any on the retaining clip - but try not to get in anywhere else.
It's easy enough unless it's gone rock hard.
Note: if the heatsink is stuck gently twist the HS - don't just pull it off as you can damage the socket. This is also why I'm getting you to stress the CPU - it will warm up the paste and make it easier to remove HS.
Basically, be gentle when removing - it should come away without having to pull it off with effort.
