New Gaming Rig Advice..

Did a second reboot and it's picked it up now.

Couple questions (Wouldn't be a post of mine without them :D)

1. My second monitors picture is a little blurry for some reason and it isn't fitting the screen properly? it's zoomed in too much.

2. When I play a game on my main monitor, if I slide my mouse to far to the right it isn't going to go over to the second monitor is it? That could get me killed :p

Windows needed to acquaint itself with the new hardware.

Go to 'Display Settings' by RMC the desktop and select 'Extend these Displays' - then click on the 'Second Monitor' and select the native resolution for that screen.

No, it will keep within the confines of the game.

Looking at 'leaked celeb pics' on your second screen while gaming will still get you killed though :D

Put extend displays on and made sure second screen is at 100% with 1920x1080p as resolution and still the same. Tried to watch a stream on it as well and the video was almost going in slow motion? Not in sync at all.

They stream leaked vids now? :D

Check that it's running at 60Hz, in landscape and also check the control panel on the monitor and that it's setup correctly.

If it remains blurry try upping scaling to 125% and see how it looks.

What are the names of both your monitors? - label the primary.

Haha there are a few around :D

I've managed to make the second monitor fit the screen now - was a setting in the menu of the tv.

Youtube videos are pretty good, there is a tiny delay between audio syncing with video but not bad, Twitch is still bad, keeps freezing and it's in slow motion.

Quality still isn't great. My main monitor is a AOC G2460 and the 2nd monitor is just an old Toshiba TV.

They are both running at their respected refresh rates.

It's an old TV and not a dedicated monitor.

The response rate will probably be relatively poor and may be the main reason for the laggy pictures.

But old is relative - how old is it?

5-6 years I think, it's my brothers old tv. Have an old VGA monitor in the garage, an actual monitor so may try that tomorrow.

Your garage is like Aladdin's cave - you need something and it appears :)

The monitor would be a good comparison/troubleshooting item. Although you will probably need a HDMI/VGA or DVI-d/VGA adaptor

Haha it does sound a bit like that doesn't it Plec!

I will give that a go shortly, haven't got round to it yet.

Sadly my brothers PC is crashing again, every time it boots (usually lasts about 5 minutes in a game of something). The screen will just go black with sort of white flickering lines going down it. Not sure what to do.

What's the spec again?

To get the ball rolling check temps of GFX and CPU - if you can.

It's possibly GFX related - if the temps don't yield anything definitive - try the onboard GFX (if he has the option) and load up a game and see what happens.

Unfortunately, could also be:
  • PSU
  • MB
  • Memory
But problem seems to lean more towards troubleshooting the GFX card at the moment...

Is it worth buying new hardware now or waiting? i currently have nothing
Depends on need, intended usage and budget?

It's not the ideal time to be buying a mid-range GFX card and memory prices are high - plus Vega's imminent release may cause some fluctuations in price but probably nothing worth delaying a build over.

Some good deals to be had in the MM Forum.

Gaming mainly and online poker multi tabling, so a nice wide monitor, but would still like to game at 4k

4K gaming would make the build pricey as you would ideally pair it with a GTX 1080ti - but GTX 1070s are at an insane price at the moment making the 1080s look relatively good value...

Also, i'm a fan of single card solutions to a PC - and although the 1080ti does the job at 4K it's not as accomplished as GTX 1080 at 1440p - which still looks amazing. Something to consider as would bring build costs down and perhaps stop the thought of SLI at a later date - which i'm personally not a fan of (but i've been out of 'that' loop for a while).

For gaming purposes and a multi table poker the 1600X would suffice - but you could choose to go the extra and get the Ryzen 7 1700/X, but wouldn't be totally necessary. Unless you plan on gaming and playing poker at the same time? But suspect your playing style would come across as 'Maniac' doing this - which may or may not aid you depending on how much you did it. Certainly the unpredictability of your playing style may help if you didn't do it all the time. :)

Monitor wise you would need to make the decision whether a large 16:9 monitor would suffice (or even a couple) or whether you want an Ultrawide. I'm not a fan of ultrawides as you have to move your head when you game - but you may actually benefit from this type of setup for your needs - gaming aside). Coupled with this decision is whether G-sync is important to you - or more importantly whether you're prepared to suck up the cost as it will add considerably more to the price of the monitor in comparison to a reasonable IPS panel at 60Hz.

If you can answer the above and give me an approximate budget i'll cobble together a few example builds for you. If you have further questions after that you will be best served making a dedicated thread as this is Beady's thread - and things may get a little confusing.

You're looking at £1600 - £2500 for the computer for 4K gaming (depending on CPU and future MB and PSU use) and then adding an additional £500 to £1000 for the monitor, depending on what you want.

Basically you could do a build for as little as ~£2300 all-in for a single card solution and standard IPS large 4K monitor. However, if you start to factor in future SLI, a 1700X and a large Gsync/ultrawide then you start approaching £3000 - £3500.

Decisions...

Don't think it would be the graphics card as it worked fine in my old build and hasn't been really used since then but knowing my luck it will be as I sold it to him! I've told him he should buy a new build tbh as some of the components such as the motherboard and CPU are very old.
