Nice one chaps! - I'd prefer the G Skill but as its a bit of a lottery I agree its worth the extra 30 or 40 quid for the 8Pack stuff.

SO! - Back to mainboards - Any further recommendations above and beyond the MSI Carbon (about £150) please? I'm not afraid to spend the little extra but unsure if its warranted for the top-end Asus etc boards. Really trying to avoid Asus this time round - they've screwed me over too much in the past with their lack of support for gear as soon as something new comes out (i.e. every 3 months lol!)

Not interested in extreme overclocking or any at all for that matter just yet - but its always something I'll end up doing once I have time. Just something moderate.... thanks.

The 3200 CL14 gskill are almost certainly bdie, for what its worth.
MSI have had quite a bad rep with ryzen, and for good reason their support is dire.
I'd be looking a b350 chipset myself, in fact I should have got a b350.
The biggest difference x370 brings is SLi and the need for refclock has been disolved since the new memory dividers the AGESA update bought with it.

Personally I don't think it is fixable. Mine actually booted fine today :) Though I know it won't do it again later.
It is written in the overclocking documents that below 20c the IMC has boot issues, hence why after a few attempts (and the IMC has warmed up) it boots fine.
The folk at overclock.net have been using sleep instead of shutdown to eliminate this.

I've found myself turning it on and going to get a drink and when I come back its done, even without the F9 errors it is still quite slow to boot.

Yeah possibly, but I think the fact it only happens at certain frequencies means there may be some calibration that can be done. Diminishing returns however are probably too high. Very few of us chasing 3466/3600 and if I were AMD I’d be chasing 3200 with Hynix.

Edit - also without doubt better on this BIOS than the last one and they’ve changed the training stages so lends some weight to it being fixable. Not holding out hope though but quite happy with the platform overall at 3333c14 although won’t buy gigabyte again.

Sleep doesn’t work on my board either... wakes up with the wrong overclock settings.

Yeah, it only occurs at >3200. Despite being 100% stable.
I'd imagine any improvements we get now will be from the motherboard manufacturers, AMD will be concentrating on other projects.
Hopefully they are contacting game devs and trying to improve gaming performance in some engines too.

@zoomee its appears gigabyte also has its quirks. If I was to buy again the asus b350 strix would be my choice.

LOL! - Great minds and all that - I was just going through the list of stuff - The ROG Strix looks like a good price!!!

Only £180 for the X370 and about £120 for the B350 version.

I dunno - I feel cheap going for the B350 version LOL! :) :) :) (no dis-respect intended lol, I've not bought less than top-end for years)!)

Well, having the crosshair hero 6 I can say that I would gladly "downgrade" to the b350 strix for £130 less.
Both offer the same ability to overclock the memory and CPU, both offer m.2 and both have the same sound chip. Same LAN etc etc.

Thats that then!!! - Nice one chaps - B350 STRIX it shall be

DARN IT! - ALL OUT OF STOCK EVERYWHERE!

What CPU are you getting. Have you considered one of the 8 Pack bundles, they offer great value for money. I can link one of you can't find them. :)

Darn it guys, stop tempting me to change motherboard :P

I have no "need" for better overclocking options... I don't. Uh-uh I don't.

...is that actually an RGB strip on it? That would look good with RGB Trident Zs, for which I actually bought a case window ¬_¬

Sounds like you need a reinstall of windows.
It does but it won't let me so I've now got my other PC (the parts of it) strewn across the floor so I can look for help.

Try the following:
  1. Stop the Windows Update service
    • Start -> Run (Windows+R) services.msc
    • Find "Windows Update" service in the list and stop it (right click, then stop)
  2. Clean out the windows update garbage
    • Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
    • delete all files in the "DataStore" and "Download" folders.
  3. Restart the "Windows Update" service (back to the services window and right click, then start)
Then try checking for updates again and see what happens - it clears all the crap out and seemed to work for me, when i had a recent windows update failure.

Definitely worth a try before resorting to a complete reinstall!

Thanks I'll give that a try.

I wants the 1700X - Bundle deal link would be great bud please. Can only seem to find Intel bundles

This may be a silly question but with my previous Intel builds the motherboard has 4 slots for memory. Numbering them 1 to 4 as I move away from the cpu I use slots 2 and 4 when using just 2 sticks of memory,

It's the same for Ryzen isn't it?

Be sure to check your mobo's manual, but usually A2 and B2 are the recommended slots for 2 DIMMs:

Mine suggested 1st and 3rd slot (A1 and B1)... practically speaking, is it likely to make a difference to things like maximum speed, or is it more about thermals and airflow?

Righto - thanks for your help chaps - i've ordered the following:
Asus ROG Strix B350-F AMD B350 (Socket AM4) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Team Group Dark Pro "8Pack Edition" 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C14 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black/
AMD Ryzen 7 Eight Core 1700X 3.80GHz (Socket AM4) Processor - Retail
EVGA Supernova G2 650W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
Sapphire Radeon RX 550 Pulse 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - TO BE UPGRADED LATER
Samsung 960 EVO Polaris 250GB M.2 2280 PCI-e 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive
Corsair Hydro Series H115i Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060027-WW)

Can anyone confirm if the CPU cooler will have AM4 fittings? and is the Samsung 960 ok to use as a boot drive? ta
