Had last week off and had to dog sit for the rents, so decided to just session a bunch of movies. Won't list them all as there's about 20 or so, just the ones that jump to mind.
Neon Demon
I like the art house genre and love most of Refn's back catalogue, but this was a little too overly stylised and on the nose. The premise is interesting and reasonably well put together but I felt the screenplay was a touch too lifeless. Maybe that was the point, but regardless...
Kong: Skull Island
Enjoyable enough. A good monster movie with plenty of mindless action sequences but fairly banal all the same. Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston's characters have to be 2 of the most miscast and poorly written characters in any blockbuster produced in the last decade.
Split
Man, I loved it. Shyamalan has finely given up on making pretentious twaddle and decided to go full on schlock. Premise is interesting and the two leads get just enough back story to sell you on there characters. It's nonsense, but great nonsense nonetheless.
I don't feel at home in this world anymore
Had high hopes for this one, but it just didn't quite gel with me. Never felt like it was going anywhere and whilst I liked Lynskeys performance, I found her character completely devoid of any personality. Has some genuinely funny moments though. Elijah woods first house storming scene with the ninja star had me on the floor.
Train to Busan
My favourite zombie movie by a country mile. If you're a fan of the genre and haven't seen it yet, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
Bride of Reanimator
The original is one of my favourite movies of all time, but I just can't get on with this at all and I have no idea why. Feels all wrong in all the places the original felt so right.
Wind River
Just superb. One of the best films of last year and hits SOOO many emotional beats dead on. Cannot recommend enough.
