What film did you watch last night?

Avengers : Infinity War - 9/10 - A second viewing hasn't changed my opinion from when I first saw it in the Cinema, an excellent film and a great way to give newer characters time to breathe whilst giving the older characters a chance to show-off a little before the finale next year. The only bad point I had was that, in HD a few feet from my big screen, the CGI looks a bit poor in places which I didn't spot in the cinema.

Hell or High Water - 6/10.

Jeff Bridges goes True Grit once more, about 30 minutes of the film is interesting and the rest is Chris Pine pouting and Ben Foster doing his usual epic levels of overacting. I think he’s vying to be the next Nicholas Cage.

Blade Runner Final Cut - 6.5/10

Sorry to all the mega fans but whilst this is a fantastic looking film even now, let alone 1982 and had some great ideas, the characters are fairly thin, mixed with some hammy acting and just not as much depth for me as people seem to pull from it in all the fan reviews and breakdowns I have read. It also moves at a snails pace. The setting and ideas are great but the execution of the story wasn't the best.

Blade Runner 2049 - 9/10

Takes the fantastic setting and visuals, updates them and actually adds character depth and a nicely paced story. Brilliant score (although the originals is still fairly good its definitely more 'of its time'). Doesn't hold your hand throughout and just found it much more absorbing. Jared Leto's character could have been more fleshed out but still made an impression with his limited screen time.

Both watched in 4k. Blade Runner looked very nice in some scenes although others showed its age a fair bit more whereas 2049 just looked amazing throughout.

Infinity War 8/10

Bets one yet of the Marvel universe. I think one of the reason why it worked so well is that the good guys didn't always win, the fight scenes were mostly done well.

Only thing I did't get was why Dr Strange didn't use the time stone at all, either to freeze time or roll it back like he did in his own movie.

Because..

He used the time stone to look at over 14 million different scenarios until he found one in which they won. You have to assume that everything afterwards is part of Dr Strange's plan, including giving Thanos the time stone, and not using it to reverse any effects otherwise. You have to assume its the scenario in which they can win overall, which will likely include undoing what Thanos has done.

He says "now we're in the end game" meaning that this is expected and part of it all. One video on youtube described the "end game" being a term chess players use when they start making big sacrifices to win the game, like deliberately losing the queen to leave the opposition open to check mate.

Nightcrawler 8.5/10

Was just on BBC 2. Very engaging thriller, quite unrealistic really, i.e, this can only happen in a Hollywood movie, but good screenplay and excellent performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and his work partner.

How it ends 5/10. Netflix movie that put 2 hours in without being too boring. Needed an actual ending or an explanation or something!

Had last week off and had to dog sit for the rents, so decided to just session a bunch of movies. Won't list them all as there's about 20 or so, just the ones that jump to mind.

Neon Demon

I like the art house genre and love most of Refn's back catalogue, but this was a little too overly stylised and on the nose. The premise is interesting and reasonably well put together but I felt the screenplay was a touch too lifeless. Maybe that was the point, but regardless...

Kong: Skull Island

Enjoyable enough. A good monster movie with plenty of mindless action sequences but fairly banal all the same. Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston's characters have to be 2 of the most miscast and poorly written characters in any blockbuster produced in the last decade.

Split

Man, I loved it. Shyamalan has finely given up on making pretentious twaddle and decided to go full on schlock. Premise is interesting and the two leads get just enough back story to sell you on there characters. It's nonsense, but great nonsense nonetheless.

I don't feel at home in this world anymore

Had high hopes for this one, but it just didn't quite gel with me. Never felt like it was going anywhere and whilst I liked Lynskeys performance, I found her character completely devoid of any personality. Has some genuinely funny moments though. Elijah woods first house storming scene with the ninja star had me on the floor.

Train to Busan

My favourite zombie movie by a country mile. If you're a fan of the genre and haven't seen it yet, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!

Bride of Reanimator

The original is one of my favourite movies of all time, but I just can't get on with this at all and I have no idea why. Feels all wrong in all the places the original felt so right.

Wind River

Just superb. One of the best films of last year and hits SOOO many emotional beats dead on. Cannot recommend enough.

With Wind River, Hell or High Water & Sicario under his belt, i'll watch anything Taylor Sheridan writes in a heartbeat, can't wait to check out the Yellowstone series.

I want a holographic girlfriend please!

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 7/10
The reason is because I had very low expectations. Everyone said it was rubbish, and I actually thought it was pretty damn good. Laughed at a few of the jokes.

Nothing wrong with GOTG2! It's just not as amazing as the first. It's still up there with the better Marvel movies for me, along with the first, Ragnorok and Infintiy Wars. I've got a soft spot for Antman too.
