New Toyota Supra formally announced

tbf I don't think it's going to sound as good as 2JZ.

modern turbo i6s are all a bit farty and meh.

This'll sound far more evocative out of the box. The 2JZ is a very smooth, comparatively quiet and unobtrusive powerplant in standard configuration. The Mk4 was a (then) heavy GT so refinement was the order of the day.

It was always a co-op effort with BMW to design a 'new' 2 seater coupe.
The weirdest thing about the 5th gen Supra, is that it looks like a BMW inside, and outside it looks like a Nissan 370z wrapped around the BMW Z4 frame. The only way you can tell that BMW partnered with Toyota on this is by being told so.

The only Supra-esq things about this car are the Supra logo on the back and the Toyota badge on the front.

Such a shame to see this happen to such a legendary brand, I loved my 80's style 1JZ Supe and my 90's style 2JZ car, but I won't be getting this new BMW as I prefer Supras and this simply isn't one.

We have an Uncle Albert in the room :D (only fools and horses - "During the warrrr".).
YOu remind me of old schoolers including myself some years back. E30 M3's owners (including me) hated the E36 M3, old school Mini fans hated the BMW Mini...….
Just have to judge the car on its merits. It's been some years now since the last supra. At least it's turbo charged and a straight 6 not a 4 pot! Also, if it wasn't associated with BMW would you have preferred it more? If the chassis is good and the engine, and I'm sure both are, I think it'll be cracker. Looks more like an older Z4 Coupe to me than a 370Z wrapped around a Z4 chassis :), especially from certain angles.
Does remind me of the old Supra's personally although I've never been a Toyota fan so no idea of the finer details about what makes a Supra of old, a Supra.
Models change. M3 are's nothing like the original either. Why cant they be 1200KG.....

lol, if only Toyota had actually bothered to do anything more than put a couple of body panels on a M240i

Yea they went on about how they learned a lot from making the LFA and gt86, then assembled a BMW. It's sacrilege :(

Hopefully they still made it FEEL like a Japanese sports car to drive.

But I have a feeling that while it probably is a very good car, it's going to get slated by Supra fans and some car journalists for not being what it should have been.

Got to say, really don't think its much of a looker. It looks very clumsy and fussy and bulgey.
