What is the main point of being able to drive around on (some?) planets with the Horizons add-on?

I've gone on and off with this game for years and finally bought the Horizons add-on at Xmas when it was on offer and haven't had chance to try it until today!

Managed to land safely and had a trundle about but there wasn't really much to see or do and I was wondering what people predominantly use the planetary landings for?

I know the game is a bit too open ended for some - personally I've enjoyed dipping back into is now and again to just do some missions/passenger trips - not keen on the combat because I'm pants at it - but what is the planetary landing predominantly for - are there planetside specific missions or mining maybe??
 
No, not followed, but been around since alpha lifetime backer and all that.

I am not really interested in any social media, I play the game read the odd forum post regarding game-play and that is it.

You get various materials required for Engineering on planets. Likewise there are missions that involve driving around. It's all pretty dull and empty like 99% of the game, but like many others I still come back as it looks good in VR and it's nice to just fly about taking in the sights!

top bloke and really genuine. I was lucky enough to meet him for a few beers with a handful of other folk the night before the launch party . As i was on my own and didnt know anyone he was a bit of a life saver. Whilst he may have not directly had that much influence of the games development he will be a loss for frontier developments and their games communities imo.

(total aside FD know how to do a launch party.... Free beer all night :) )

I'm really only using the SRV for some additional XP towards Elite in Exploration and to unlock the Guardian modules. After that you just farm for a few sites for parts or high materials tha can be swapped at a mat/tech trader.

Most of the time it can be a pain to manoeuvre on some places as due to less and less mavity it gets stuck or trips over any small object and of course takes a bit of time to change direction due to momentum. So it's has some specific uses currently and adds some interest but needs more diverse environments and maybe more vehicle selection. Which could start to be added in the next update but that may be months or even next year.

I achieved Elite in trading for example just by mining deep core asteroids and that netted 1 billion+ credits and only really took a few days to do. It wasn't like that at way back at launch.

So engineering and the ability to land on some (non-atmosphere) planets was probably the biggest update and the content updates, graphical and lighting updates coming in the Beyond updates.

The DW2 journey will be an incentive for a lot of players to keep on trucking but after that they may need another big content update or suffer a tail off in players. I certainly skipped about 2-3 or after the Horizons launch due to lack of content and the initial Horizon update just didn't quite have enough to tempt me to buy it at the time.

I might catch up with the DW2 crowd myself this week as I have a couple of days off and I've just got my Kraight Phantom engineered sufficiently. If not I'll just follow Obsidian Ant on his streams to see what's what.

Probably quite a good representation of reality then :)

With the new exploration update it is now far easier to locate geological and biological sites of interest and that can make obtaining some materials far easier, and I certainly advise going to see some Guardian sites to obtain the tech and it is well worth spending the time to obtain access to a Thargoid site for the experience, even better if you get to one when the local star is low and there's some gas pooling around the area, very cool looking :)
 
I have to say I'm struggling to get into the combat side of the game - I've got a fairly decent Cobra with 2 x pulse lasers (good for bringing down shields from what I gather?) and 2 x multi cannons to inflict some damage - but my wider problem is finding my target! (In the past I've exclusively done trading and passenger missions!)

I set off on a very basic assassination job but couldn't actually locate my target - am I right in assuming that you have to have an interdiction module to pull your target out of supercruise?

Whenever I saw my target in my HUD he would just vanish and my targeting recticle swapped to the nearest planet/conflict zone and when I dropped out of supercruise there was nothing there!

Sorry if this is a basic question but I've not tried combat outside of the training mission!

Depends on the mission but for most Assassination missions you won't need a FSD Interdictor. Go to target sytem, scan Nav Beacon and a "Mission Target" entry will pop up in the Navigation panel (scroll right through). You'll also get a message and the mission will update in the Transactions tab showing which body in the system to head to.

You can then find the location and drop out of supercruise as you normally would for a station, USS etc.

If you don't get them 1st time round (say they low wake into supercruise) the Mission Target marker will move and you track it down again, as above from Navigation Panel.

To actually answer your question though, yes, you will need an FSD Interdictor to pull anything out of supercuise.

Yeah absolutely! Just always feels a shame from a game perspective that the devs have never managed to get the game to hit it's potential, still good though despite so many shallow/unfinished/flawed things!

Played the other day for the first time since the new lighting was added, jumped into a system with a class A/B start in VR - holy crap that was bright, I could barely look at the star! Supercruised to the station and even the station was damn bright due to it's proximity to the star. Very cool experience that demonstrated the power of the star, I'll have to go find a really dim red dwarf or similar and see whether everything is really dark now! :D
