BP Ultimate over Shell V-Power (Diesel) ?

Petrol is a much cleaner burn compared to diesel though, just look at all the soot that comes out of the exhaust when people put their foot down in diesels (before DPF's obviously)

I've seen inside multiple petrol engines ran on both cheap fuel and V Power and the difference was quite substantial in terms of carbon build up on valve faces and piston crowns.

I've also had the injectors from these engines ultrasonically cleaned and flow tested and the results, again, were noticeable. Injectors ran on V Power had only a slight increase after cleaning (2-3cc/min) where the other injectors were 10-15 times worse.

Proof, in my eyes, that there are detergents in these fuels that are worth the additional cost.

Completely anecdotal but I'm convinced my old '05 Sportage ran smoother on 'premium' diesel. I just put the cheapest stuff in my newer cars though.

Were the engines run in the same manner? I mean the difference between one that’s been mainly used for town driving compared to one that’s been on the motorway? Or one that’s been driven hard to something that’s been driven fairly moderate? Just curious that’s all.

I used to fill one tank in four with premium diesel when I had Honda CR-Vs with the 1.6L I-DTEC engine, mainly to help with keeping DPF and the injectors clean as both cars ran short journeys during the week.

Now that I live in the sticks and every journey is at least 20 minutes / 15 km each way, I just put whatever bog standard diesel the supermarkets are selling in my two Renault powered diesels.

The one I mentioned had been driven hard often (it was a GM V6) with over 100k miles. Short journeys at low revs probably isn't very healthy for an engine.

Two of them were my own, did about 30k on one engine using mostly V-Power and about 20k on the other using whatever fuel I could get my hands on. Same style of driving, a fair bit of motorway, some spirited, rarely sat around idling for long periods in busy traffic. Another engine of the same type was in my friend's car, same mix of driving, maybe a little more idling and low speed stuff as he used to commute from Rochdale to Leeds... I'm sure you know what the M62 is like in a morning. The car wasn't babied around though and got driven hard at times, maybe harder than my own. Supermarket fuel was was used, engine full of carbon and injector spray pattern was poor.

I'll have a look though old photos and see if I can find anything.

I've monitored DPF soot levels on our old Zafira and premium diesel was allowing it to go almost twice as long before a regen. The cost difference is too high it will help the DPF last longer but you are talking covering 150k+ to see that benefit and by then you will have spent more than the cost of the DPF on fuel. I expect later in the cars life the injectors will be working far better if they are kept clean again you are unlikely to keep the car for 100k+ to see those benefits either. If it was only 1-2p more a litre I would probably use it continually.

I avoid supermarket diesel due to the local BP/Shell garages being the same price as the supermarket fuels. I do like the local Shell has an attendant to fill up saves any chance of getting smelly diesel on your hands.

I do understand why people use it on diesels but when its £5 more on a £70 tank I think its pointless unless you are going to keep the car for a really long time (10 years). Most people will change it after 3 years so aren't bothered

On the subject of Shell. Has anyone been using the new ShellGo+ app? I got a £1 voucher for 10 visits. Are the rewards always this bad?

I have to say Tesco 99 makes my R8 feel the best. I hate the fact I am using it, but it just makes the car sharper than Shell VPower.

I am going to get rickets for something?

I thought Costco was an american discount supermarket?

I doubt Costco "premium" is that premium.
