AMD Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) - *** NO COMPETITOR HINTING ***

So is it true backwards compatibility isn't as clear cut regarding B350s and X370s? I have a CH6 and would like to drop in a 3700X or 3800X further down the line.

ASUS have already stated that their X370 and B350 will support Zen 2:

"ASUS will release BIOS updates for its 300 and 400 series motherboards to add support for next-generation AMD Ryzen CPUs. The latest BIOS update for each motherboard model can be downloaded from the official ASUS website as it becomes available,"

That's the BIOS versions that will bring support and they are rolling them out as they become ready.

Gigabyte has said similar: https://www.gigabyte.com/Press/News/1689

As has ASRock: https://www.asrock.com/news/index.asp?iD=4238

Not confident my B450 strix-f will overclock the 3700X so sticking with the Ryzen 5 3600, if they can get on par with a 8700k in gaming that will do me.

yeah just a shame they haven't actually updated the supported cpu lists yet, well at least on x370-prime's support page. hopefully it happens before release or there could be a lot of upset people trying to ram a 16 core cpu in a board that cant support it, im assuming the 12 core will work at stock at least with the same tdp as the 1800x but who knows.

Nope, she made clear that the 3800x was "thee" gaming chip of the lineup.
Then then tested the 3900x against a HEDT system. NOT in gaming like the 3800x.

Im telling you. people are going to be dissapointed if they think these 12 and 16 core chips will beat the 8 core in gaming. She couldn't have been clearer. I'm assuming it's inter chiplet latency.
That's was my exact conclusion. Her words were very clear and well considered.

Best to wait for reviews to see how 8 core and 12 core do against each others.
Next-gen consoles are going to bring major increase to CPU usage of multiplatter games and if you like having browser etc open on background extra cores are never bad thing.
(current consoles may have 8 cores, but those are pocket calculator performance level cores)

Thanks I'm hoping I can get away with an 8-core, X570 and RAM only rebuild, anything Ryzen is going to be a huge upgrade from where I am now still on 2500K! I've been waiting since last September for Ryzen 3000 so I'm looking forward to reviews.

What's the best Zen2-compatible chipset that isn't the X570 then, for someone that needs to buy a new motherboard either way?
If you don't need the x470 features the ASUS ROG Strix B450-E has reputedly the best VRM for B450 board - Clicky. It kinda slipped in unnoticed, and is not widely available ~£140.

The MSI Tomahawk and Carbon are also have quality VRMs - Carbon being the superior - ~£100.

I’m a year after you on Ivy (2012) and have been wanting to build again for years, but for my needs it’s never been quite justifiable.

As has been said previously, many Sandy and Ivy owners may go for Zen 2. I’m planning a new build around a 3900X as soon as they are available.

I too will be looking to upgrade my trusty 3770K..
Been waiting for this release for a long while now! Hoping it delivers.

Not that I have any particular brand allegiance, but the stream of Intel based performance hitting security patches recently is slightly annoying.

I'll likely be targeting the 8 core for now, with a view to upgrading to the 16 if it seems worth it further along down the road (here's hoping window scheduler issues are sorted).

The only annoying bit about the launch is the mobo's and the chipset fan. I remember having a mobo with one previously and it wasn't quite under load and the damn thing failed eventually.
I don't mind splashing out a bit of cash on an expensive fanless heatsink design, but so far I can only find the Gigabyte one.

On an O/T note, Intel only did this to themselves. Years of sitting of new architecture designs because they couldn't fix their 10nm node..
Glad to have AMD back.

The fan is not an issue, it does not even operate until the chipset hits 60c and that is only likely to happen when running raid nvme.
