Potential power outages this winter

I was looking forward to the Network premier of Terminator 2 on the telly only for a power cut in the first 10 mins. What a pain. Didn't even have mobile phones back then. Had to sit and read a book!

Yeah, but your house doesn't immediately drop in temperature, it takes hours.

Our boiler went kaput in the middle of Feb a couple of years back and had to wait for a new mainboard. Flow switch cracked and leaked all over it frying it. We lived without heating for 2 weeks.

The cold showers were a tad spicy especially in the morning but just wrapped up warm and got through it. This whole scare mongering about old people dying in the winter is tosh. Our house never went to single digits.

Very few battery storage systems allow you to provide power to the house during a power cut. The Tesla powerwall does it, the GivEnergy one does too I think but many others don't. It has to be able to completely isolate you from the grid to stop power going out to the grid during a powercut too (on safety grounds, to stop you electrocuting technicians working on the lines)

They all can, but its about £1k for most systems to create islanding. Its not even standard on all Teslas although it might be on the latest (rocking hose **** levels of availability) version
Even those that do tend to normally only do one circuit or a specific plug etc since many cant support high output. GE for example is 2.5kw from spec sheet so very easy to overload on a normal house. No kettle for starters!

Half of Yorkshire is currently in the dark. The half that had electricity in the first place, admittedly.

A reason to at least have a tenner for when the card machine goes down in the pub

God help us if the war in Ukraine escalates and people are actually expected to fight for their freedom.
We'd lose. The youth would be posting pics of them and their locations on insta and snap chat.
Hell, the enemy would only have to look for idiots dancing for a snap chat video.

Dancing on the front line for a tik tok video. no one would sign up anyway as no one has a gender these days so it would be impossible.

Mine has battery backup but newer systems don't I believe

But as per my message above you'd likely not have heating either ?

I have no battery backup for broadband/VoIP, yet... and the heating is oil. I do have two generators that hasn't been run in a few years now. Probably 4 years.

Yeah, with no electrickery I'd have no heating. I'd have to light the hob and sit in the kitchen.

I used to have that with the coal fire stove.

Hours can go by fast if the power is down for a long time. I remember a bad winter in 2000 where we were down for 5 days. Ground was so wet trees took down the power lines to many villages. Luckily we still had the coal stove to keep the kitchen warm and cook stuff/kettle. Unlike now.

Timber house cools down fast after 4 - 5 hours.

The camping equipment will cover in handy. Lights and gas stove can always get the BBQ out ;)

At least it could be the end of christmas light displays so a thumbs up here.
Hadn't thought of that.

Awesome maybe all those god awful massive multi coloured light shows will become a thing of the past.

This may have just made my christmas

I've got medical equipment that I need electricity to power so I hope the timing of this blackout doesn't cause me medical problems.

I'm planning to buy a backup power source just in case.
Apply for priority with your supplier if you haven’t already, and they offer it :)

Our house will go into single digits in the winter especially our bedroom which seems to be the coldest room in the house.
