The daft thing is most of us don't see the issue with the 4090 price, it's the 4080 which is the issue, it's just priced too high (especially if you go by xx103 designation) and actually makes the 4090 look good value..... which could be Nvidia doing an Apple thing where it makes more sense just to pay that 'little more' to get the next tier up. Not to mention trying to shift old 3xxx stock at inflated prices (they need a major price cut).THat's a key point. Times are different now. Historically NV don't drop their prices but we're going through economic conditions not seen for a long time. Prices have increased massively at a bad time. If supply exceeds demand, lower profit per unit will be better than none, if AMD & NV can't sell what they're making.
I'm not one to complain about prices and this is not even a whinge about current pricing either but I doubt the current pricing will be sustainable going through next year.
I 'need' an nvidia card due to cuda, AMD just isn't an option when they don't have an equivalent language for software to tap into (opencl got dropped by my software). I can afford a 4090 and logically at the current prices the FE is the way to go but my 5950x would basically be underpowered (not saying it's slow) and I'd be better matched to a 4080 (ti). The issue is the 4080 is not 'worth' £1200 when the 4090 is £1600, the extra cost on the 4090 is too small for people willing to spend over £1000 on a gpu.I think you are right, but it remains to be seen what happens. To my mind there are clearly lots of people (here at least) who are just chomping at the bit to buy an NVIDIA. It all comes down to what price the masses give up and start buying again. There are many factors, but I can't see it getting easier. The recession hasn't really bitten people yet, and this months energy bills are going to sting, especially if this weather continues. Who knows where this will all go?
I've waited through the 3000 series shortages and price gouging with my trusty 1060 6GB.... I can wait a little longer for the 4000 series too lol.... If I'd managed to snag a 3080/90 at retail last year I wouldn't even be contemplating a 4000 series.
