Underrated/cult movies?

On the subject of "cult" and "underrated" movies, I think it's really hard to have those these days as everyone can access most of them very easily and of course there's the internet having much info/debate etc

Some damn good films on here though not sure if Cult and Underrated apply to them these days however.

Two I would say that were underrated films at least on release and shortly thereafter would be Time Bandits and Withnail and I. I also think to have be a "cult" following I think a movie has to spawn a "cult" audience Withnail certainly does that, so does The Big Lebowski, not sure something like Dark City which is fantastic, has that kind of "cult" community around it. I think a true "cult" film has to embed itself into popular culture - TBL and Withnail have certainly done that.
 
How's about the Malcolm McDowell "Mick Travis" trilogy of films...

O Lucky Man in particular is an awesome British 70's cult classic. Pig Man, chocolate sandwich etc.
 
Almost Famous - Was well reviewed but most people I speak to have never seen it, especially when talking about the coming of age genre and it's one of my favourite films.

Welcome to the Jungle - Early Dwayne Johnson film with Sean-William Scott (Stifler) but funny, great action and Christopher Walken doing his best Christopher Walken.
The Losers - Bit like the A-Team featuring a young Chris Evans, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Idris Elba but thoroughly entertaining.

I watch hackers once a year. It’s a terrible movie really but underrated purely down to how good the soundtrack is and probably the only movie Angelina was hot in. Plus as a young kid it gave me a love for computing even though all the hacking scenes are just screensavers lol

The full film is on Youtube, watching it now is quite nostalgic as the same as you it was one of the first videos I watched when hiring videos was all the rage, and being a similar age at the time the "naughty" shenanigans were quite imprinting so to speak, it is certainly of its time though. Clearly a massive rip off of Animal House, but being a kid at the time I'd never heard of Animal House, and the first time I watched it I thought, hey, this is a rip off of King Frat!

This is a cult classic. And one always think of with "cult"

Seems that anyone who likes the genre loves this film. So even though it wasn't a success, those who've seen it rate it.

If you haven't seen... Wtf are you doing? Watch it!
 
I kind of like Lexx. Super super weird though. And I like weird stuff. But that's the limit!

Dazed and Confused. Not that I was alive in the 70s, but I think it does a great job of making you want to live a day in that era.

Early performances from Ben Affleck, Mila Jojovitch to name a few.
 
Someone mentioned Ed Wood earlier. Johnny Depp has had a few that were cults without making much money.

In the same sort of era I will throw in American Graffiti and Wanderers. Both superb.

A little less known I'll add:
12 Angry Men from 1957
Silent Running from 1972
Westworld from 1973 that spawned a recent series remake
Rollerball from 1975
Logan's Run from 1976 that briefly spawned a series

I would put just about all of those in the "well known" category.

Gave it three tries .. no chance. There are folk who see it as a cult classic, or even THE cult classic. Not for me and I love his films.
