Underrated/cult movies?

Bit of a weird thread this? Loads of genius 'not well known' films around, you know, Tarkovsky, Buñuel, Kurosawa etc etc ... but do they count? Maybe they are 'cult' in a slightly challenging way?

Yep, it's a bit like asking "which unpopular films are secretly popular or will be in the future?" Well, believe it or not the original Bladerunner was a commercial failure when it released but has become a massive success in recent years. But ask that same question after it was released and the answer would have been "Bladerunner, what's that?"

Waterworld

Was an abject failure at the box office initially, but actually came back to make a profit. I saw it again a couple of years ago. It is poor, but probably fun for a 12 year old. No worse than the latest Mad Max film.

Not underrated by those that know and love it, but "Deep Red" by Dario Argento is well worth seeing once.

It may start you down the rabbit hole of "Giallo" movies

Ronin

Enjoyed it when it was at the cinema but for some reason thought it was a "lesser" De Niro film after the likes of Goodfellas and Casino. Now looking back I think it's a classic. Understated European thriller, practical effects, and superb performances all round.

This. One of John Frankenheimer's last Films. I like it due to no CGI, the stunts & the locations. Performances are good apart from that of Sean Bean.

Many films I would consider as cult have already been mentioned!

My suggestions (likely be pooh-poohed) :D

The Butterfly Effect
Red Rock West
Kuffs
Outland

only underrate cult movie's i can think of are the following

tremors 1 & 2
the crow
the abyss
the breakfast club
the lost boys
the thing
the bug red one
the goonies
the right stuff
heavy metal
Time Bandits
Léon: The Professional
Ronin
three days of the condor
tron
caddyshack
weird science
highlander
bladerunner
Robocop

Not sure a lot of them can be considered "underrated" . Certainly things like leon, tron, highlander, bladerunner, the breakfast club.

Ok, maybe not a cult movie, but it is one that, to me is underrated. Time Trap.
I watched it on Prime on the off chance one evening a couple of years ago. I was hooked. Acting not the best, I think all unknowns, but adequate. The plot and general over all theme and idea was really good and the ending made me want more, just like, an extra 10 minutes to expand on the ending really.

really good film, certainly not Oscar worthy, but up there with some great sci-fi movies.

Edit: Ahh. Maybe these two to add. Class of 1984 and Class of 1999.

Oh how did i miss that? That looks good, on my list to watch this weekend. Thanks.

How about Starship Troopers? It's crap, but I like it!
The first film I ever got on DVD. Region 1, imported through the shop on Broomfield Road in Chelmsford. I bought it simply because he had it. The family and I watched it on my 17” PC screen.

Then afterwards, I remember capturing a frame at a time and making a gif from the shower scene ;)

It’s not a cult movie though.
