5 points off Spurs with 2 games in hand so they could be 5th.
 
Well we will just see our midfield ruined for another 6 months the joy, ya know cause our scouts can't find any one apparently that will fit

No midfielders in the world that would improve an aging, injury ravaged midfield, not one. Another shocking, head in the sand, transfer window from everyone involved.

That's irrelevant though. Stay at Brighton even in potentially 5th and none of the recent consistency or go to Arsenal or Chelsea for Triple the wages and much more chance of consistent top 5 finishes. It's never been harder to get top 4 and only going to get harder as Newcastle get stronger. You don't stay at Brighton when you are offered that.

I mean I wouldn't be shocked to see Arsenal win the league and then not even finish top 4 next year.

The question isn't whether you can get an upgrade on Milner or Ox but whether you can sign somebody that's ultimately good enough for where you want to be. Signing somebody better than Milner but who still needs improving on in 6 months achieves one thing and that's to waste money.

I really struggle to get my head around this desperation to sign anybody. In summer 2020 when we needed a CB we could have signed Kabak for £20m and that would have appeased supporters. He turned out to be utter **** and would have possibly/probably meant we couldn't have signed Konate 12 months later but at least we signed somebody I suppose.

There's undoubtedly players out there that could solve our midfield issues but there's risk attached to every signing a club makes. We are clearly one of the most risk averse clubs when it comes to transfers - we often leave ourselves short in certain areas but we also rarely waste money too. Unfortunately we don't have a bottomless pit of cash to just keep signing replacements for flops.

Melo should be back by the end of Feb I believe, but I still think we’re saving our pennies for Jude. That’s why we won’t sign anyone.

So we sign no one and keep struggling for how long?

There is a risk for every single transfer for every club, we could sign a world class player and he becomes a total flop too.

We're not saying quick sign every midfielder possible. It's the position that's had the least spent on it and needed upgrades for multiple seasons.

Nunes would have improved us went to Wolves for little cash in footballing terms.

Let's say we get Bellingham (I doubt we will) he is regarded as an improvement rightly so and proven he can do well, what if he didn't though and struggled, but we held out all our money for him.

We're even worse off in that scenario.

I hope milner stays on but as a coach that's it, I feel he would offer allot in that regard.

I mean he'll we signed Gakpo in a position that we arquebaly had plenty of cover for if we assume no injuries.

I'm glad we got him but it wasn't a priority position

No, I didn't say we should sign nobody and I'm not saying that the way the club works is 100% perfect or even the right way. My point was that supporters continuously ignore the consequences of wasting money. They're quick to complain when they're asked to pay more for tickets or the price of Sky but they expect clubs to just spend spend spend.

There are risks to all signings and Liverpool have tried to mitigate those risks by being ultra picky over who they do and don't sign. Overall you cannot have many complaints because we've continually punched above our weight however it's not without it's issues as we've seen this season.

You say Nunes would have improved us but what is this based on? He's an attack minded creative midfielder that's struggling to hold a spot down in a Wolves side at the bottom of the table. Would he really have improved a Liverpool side whose problems have been defensively? I don't see it, not in the short term at least. As a long term, more attacking replacement for Thiago? Maybe but I don't see how he'd have helped our defensive issues this season. As I said, I'm sure there are players out there that could have improved us but there's no guarantees in life and as I said, we're a club that are risk averse when it comes to signings so we've got to be pretty convinced before we pull the trigger. Again, this isn't perfect and contributed to why we have these midfield issues but people have to acknowledge that signing x doesn't mean we'd be better off either because signing the wrong player doesn't just hurt you today, it hurts you for the next 2-4 years because you can't shift them and it impacts your ability to sign the right player.
 
It's a hell of a fee for a player who has played 26 games in the Premier League and has been a regular for just over half a season. Since we changed our transfer model though, almost all of our transfers have been hits and trust Arteta and Edu's judgement on this one.

I think Rice would make more sense tactically but clearly we are thinking about, and have needs in, the present. Although SSN suggested this doesn't change our summer targets. I can't see £150m+ being spent on two midfielders, but we'll see.
