BMW and M Power Owners

Most cars have embedded sims these days for the emergency GPS location in the event of an accident. Other stuff as well, such as app access for locking/ unlocking etc.

Are you saying embedded SIM referring to esim technology or just stating the car has mobile connectivity (and using SIM as a synonym for mobile)

I'd thought some bmw have option of a personal esim in addition to cars one - OK google suggests that's other countries.
would also be logical if you could divert your mobile calls directly to cars 4g/5g inbuilt antenna&radio, or use (cheap) VOIP on it.

I've ripped the Old ATM unit apart. There is no physical Sim card, however there is an appropriate chip that can store an eSim details. So I presume older ones can?
It's an iD6 car

I was curious as to whether the multiple decade flex about BMW sim trays was 1) true, and 2) useful. Turns out it was neither as it is still IMSI locked to a provider. A shame really as cheap bolt-on data plans would be super useful.

I wonder who the network provider is that bmw use... or is it one of those multi network sim situations

Yeah they are useless without being registered to BMW.

As far as I knew, up to F generation cars the SIM is physical and somewhere in the boot. G generation have moved to eSIM.

What's the advantage to a bolt on data plan though? That's what I'm missing it seems.

Vodafone probably. Their m2m setup uses international IMSIs so they can become localised without any faff at manufacturing line.
