Tell me your are joking! You sure that was Community Fibre?

I don't get it. Why do that and not activate? For me they said end of August when I asked online so I am thinking that should be the latest hopefully. But truth is I am expecting before that as they have done a few poles nearby and other roads with 1 minute walk have It live already.

Also guys installing on the pole said a couple of weeks.

Yep. I took a pic on 28/3 and can read community fibre on the yellow tag. God know why it isn't active yet. A mate live 5 mins away and it's the same on his road.

Well hopefully fingers crossed I get lucky. Would be annoyed if I had to wait months on end when the road next to mine has it.

Either way FTTP from any company will be better than VM's cable. Although, compared to CF, OR FTTP does look more expensive, especially with the significantly lower upload speed.

Yeah, I can’t really complain about VM myself though, it’s pretty good here for most part, I will look at options in 18 months time though.

See if you can get close and zoom in and take a picture of the black box. May say CF on it.

I will keep you posted if I manage to get it. If I do it may mean you are a few days behind me.

But based on everything I have read even I am a couple of weeks away if lucky.

Yeah. CF seems a great deal. Shame about CGNAT, but for the price and what you get can one really complain?

They should do a 2GB line without CGNAT for £35. Bet many would grab that. £49 is just a bit much :p

Just a tip for you Jonney my boy. When your contract ends, if you end up getting a new cheaper contract rather than sticking with the £2 increase plus rpi, I hear they may stick you on CGNAT. So make sure you ask when the time comes.

It is too late for me and my beach lovin bud. But you guys may benefit from that info :D

Don't want to panic you anymore, but similar happened near me. The road directly at the top of mine has community fibre on the poles, still not live for that road, another road of that also has the same thing, poles with the fibre spool on them, but that's it. Both were done at the same time my road was done (over a year ago), but still just have the spool hanging on the pole. Setup doesn't look any different to the roads that are live, it's just not be moved on for those roads for some reason :confused:


Don't know if cgnat will cause me any problems, but will prod them and see if I end up on it, if I can get onto a new deal before contract is out (still not done it, stuff keeps getting in the way :()

I am hoping end of next month at the latest based on what they told me. If it turns out nothing happens by then, I will need to tuck tales and head back to virgin for another 18 months or go on a slow arse fttc on a monthly contract.

Might do the latter as I am finding I can get by perfectly fine on a slow speed until the point I need to download something large. I can always work around that by doing all my large downloads at a family or friends when needed as they have CF 1GB already. Better than going back to virgin I feel honestly :cry:

AWS are going to start charging for IPv4 addresses https://www.theregister.com/2023/07/31/aws_says_ipv4_addresses_cost/, so services that are hosted there are going to have to implement IPv6 just to control their own costs. I would expect the other cloud providers to follow, where IPv6 is free but IPv4 has a monthly cost for each address.

There are things you can do to avoid needing a public IPv4 if your connection uses CGNAT - if you want to share Plex with friends and family then you have VPN overlay options like Tailscale and Zerotier. If you need inbound connectivity to HTTPS services then look at Cloudflare tunnel or Azure AD Application Proxy. The only thing left really is hosting servers for games yourself like if you wanted to start up an Unreal Tournament game, or if you need to connect to a service where the access is determined by the IP address that you're connecting from. In these cases the £2/month A&A L2TP service capped at 3Mbps might be sufficient. All of these are more secure than having open IPv4 ports.

Has anyone moved their termination point themselves? Looking at buying this for the house move as the internet is in a living room which we want to convert to a bedroom.

Edit - the challenge will be getting it to where I want, the utility room as it seems you can't bend the cable too much. Would need to go from that front lounge, through the hallway and through the under the stairs cupboard into the utility room next to it.

Not me, no; Mine was asked to be run further in from the get go, and thus was already in place where I wanted it to be.

But I'd like to ask if there a reason why you can't or don't want to just keep the termination point where it is, keep the Modem hooked up there (neatly and tidily, out of the way) and then run a single Cat5e/Cat6 cable (something that can take more harsher bends and turns) into the Utility Room to connect to whatever you have (or intend to have there) as required instead?

Since the ONT externally is powered by battery outside, and the inside is only reliant on your Modem to connect to it and keep the connection live before you connect it to the utility room. And it's unlikely to need frequent reboots or anything like that anyway either.

Neither the ONT nor Modem as far as I can tell makes a sound, so should be fine for a Bedroom, especially if tucked away so none of the indicator LEDs on the modem blink/flash to disturb the occupant.

Never done that. What I did was use the copper pipes for the radiators coming down into the living room where the router is and used a ethernet cable which went directly into the bedroom we use as an office. There I used a switch to hook up the computers.

That said when I eventually get Community Fibre to install I will get them to install directly into that room :D

You can use a flat ethernet cable like in did if you can get away with it. But if you need to drill might as well go normal cable.
