Yeah I think that's where the nuance lies in this gen for AMD. RT performance really let the 7000 series down, so balancing that side of things out would make this gen a more rounded option. It's probably another factor in why they decided to only target mid-range as well.

Yeah this is why I have combined both raster and RT performance and have a simple average uplift. RT is now near the stage where the majority of new AAA games support it, so we can no longer simply look at raster on its own.

The nuance being that AMD clearly allocated more silicon budget to the RT side. So we need to factor that in to our overall assessments.

I mean GRE price, not performance. The GRE was £550 to £600 on release of if I recall. I have never looked at EOL prices as a guide to what new MSRP should be.

So given the alleged performance leaks a 9070 XT can be argued to be a 7900 GRE replacement. ~25% raster increase and ~50% extreme RT increase.

I believe the idea is gre level pricing, not performance. Looks like it will be a fair bit faster, for similar money. Though it's all guess work at this stage as the only official thing we know is the name and "March"

Starfield released in Sept 2023 and I got my 7900 XT in July with the Starfield premium code for £699. So yes if the 9070 XT was the same price, it would indeed be terrible.

But as far as performance leaks show the 9070XT will be about 10% faster in raster and about 40% better in extreme RT than a 7900 XT. So would that be a meaningful upgrade at (guessing) £600? That would be down to personal preference but it also loses sight of the fact the 9070 XT is not aimed as a 7900 XT replacement. So your expectations of 30% extra performance over a 7900 XT for £500 are unrealistic to be fair. Because that would be just 10% below a 4090 performance for £500. And I don’t mean Jensen’s fake frames BS 5070 = 4090

But if AMD do think £699 is a fair price then yes, that would be terrible.

I understand where you are coming from @CAT-THE-FIFTH but as more performance leaks are revealed I’m starting to believe the 9070 is more in line as the 7800 XT replacement and the 9070 XT is more in line with the 7900 GRE replacement. So I have revised my ideas of where they line up against the current stack.

Both give about 20% - 25% higher raster and about 40% - 50% higher extreme RT performance compared to the 7800 XT and 7900 GRE respectively. Average those uplifts out and you get the 30% - 40% generational uplift we expect to see.

If accurate then a 9070 at £500 would be a decent price and the 9070 XT at £600 is again decent. Not great, but decent.

Let’s see what AMD do.

The issue are the price rises. Mainstream gamers are more price sensitive. I don't think anyone I know personally will spend £500+ to replace an RX7800XT or RX6700XT. Most of last year the RX7800XT was well under £500.

Ah ok. If 5080 is almost 4090 performance in raster for £1k, and 7900XT was £700 for 35% lower performance, then I'd be expecting maybe a 20% uplift from 7900 XT for around the same price I guess. Something of that order.

But don't think 20% is worth upgrading for. Better of getting 5080 for +35% at £1k.



On reflection the 7900XT was a pretty decent card. Its still appearing in the top 10 or so cards shown on the benchmark charts for the 5090 reviews.

I'm convinced the TPU specs are completely wrong BTW as they copy a lot of the previous gen specs exactly, like the cache. So there's no real information to go on. That won't work at all - even if AMD is faster in rasterised,Nvidia will be ahead in RT. Plus Nvidia gets devs to massively optimise for Nvidia in those titles which makes AMD RT performance look worse than it should. The RX7800XT prices were bookended by the RTX4070 street prices dropping closer to £500. Plus the PS5 Pro is probably RTX4070 level performance. A RX9060XT would be barely be better than an RX7800XT/RTX4070 and would match a console at best.

So we are back to square one again.

You seem to be working on hypotheticals that mean nothing to MSRP pricing. What if the 5070 has very limited supply and retailers scalp it to £650, but the 9070 is £500 and faster with more VRAM? Another hypothetical that means nothing.

The RT uplift on the 5090 shows similar scaling to the 4090. So RT has not been improved in Blackwell. This means the 9070/XT will be closer in RT to Nvidia than AMD have ever been.

I agree with this in theory, but I think this is where I differ on a subjective level - I've accepted that I'm going to have to pay more for less whichever card I go for, if i want to upgrade. It just depends on the size of the appendage and amount of lube required

Everyone has a different opinion on perceived value. What I am doing is looking at respective total uplift compared to previous performance tiers and pricing.

Current leaks put the 9070 XT at roughly 20% - 25% faster in raster and 50% - 60% faster in extreme RT over a 7900 GRE. So that was enough for me to revise my assessment that the 9070 XT was a 7800 XT replacement.
