***Sid Meier's Civilization VII***

By best do you mean as in best for a new player because it was dumbed down so much?
6 (with a few mods and all the DLC) presents a lot of information upfront, making it a very easy 4X game to see a path from start to finish. It was a lot of fun in that regard but also lacks some surprise, an old mate of mine used to hate the last 1/3rd of the game because you could see you won and there wasn't much joy in playing it out for him, which a few thousand hours in I can see.

An hour into 7 and I can see I haven't scratched the surface of how it play, which is nice, it needs more time and attention to really enjoy the empire you build.

Who ever designed this 7 UI needs to be shot.
It looks utterly childish.

I feel like I'm playing in 800x600 at 1440p

Upscaling?

A proper game tomorrow

Feels like a very streamlined / dumbed down for console 4 X game. The UI is clunky and uninformative. Combat is slow and tedious ; on one hand it's great you have army commanders acting as generals to "round up" the troops and move them en masse, but the commander himself moves at a snail's pace across the map. Will need to play more to experience what transitioning from age to age feels like. Not convinced by the devs decision to make the player choose a leader which often has zero connection to the civilisations you play throughout the game ... feels jarring to me.

Through the first age and it's a really well put together game, I'm not super focused on winning the first run though just enjoying the ride a bit with the upgraded mechanics.

It looks much more like Civ 5 to me in style/colour pallet which I'm a big fan of, plus the world is genuinely really nice. It also runs significantly better than 6 (on Mac here as well).

The most jarring bit is the game isn't setup to give the player the dopamine rush every time you do good (civ 6 era score system credit Suede CivIII for that perfect description of the game), it's almost like I'm weening my self off that before I'm really ready for 7.

Turning off the high resolution UI (or whatever its called in the options) helps a bit, still a crap UI but makes it a bit more tolerable
Thank you! Was wondering why it was a bit too small

I don't like this game it gives me memories of Civ5 out of the box which I just didn't enjoy playing for all the same reasons. A lot of turns with nothing happening, the actions I do take are directed by the computer asking me something rather than an active strategy of my own. There is not a lot of 4X in this game, I don't know how most of the choices I make affect the the game and my strategy (worst tutorial in Civ I can remember). There is very little in the way of UI that tells me what is going on and some of the mechanism are very mruky and badly explained. Honestly my gaming time is very precious to me, I'm a middle aged father of two working full time, this game is almost certainly going to be consigned to the wait until it's any good category just as Civ 5 was. That game was great after the 2 DLC but not for me before that. Civ6 had balance issues out the box but the game was solid.

So ironically I'll be probably playig more Civ6 in the next few months than this, it just really doesn't land for me. Still I also need to finish Hogwarts Legacy and I'm enjoying catching an hour or two of Elite Dangerous here and there so a bit more time for those.

Yeah i think calling it a civ 5 feeling is actually how im at it too.
Ive literally only had 2h barely scratched it but it feels to me like something is missing, basic quality of life stuff.

I played multiplayer and we rarely knew it was end of turn, there's no sound associated.

It's a step from 5/6 in building mechanics, it's just a bit jarring lol.

It deffo feels even more Xboxified than 6 did....

It's a bit heartbreaking but I'm sure I'll learn to love her again.

They have definitely leaned too far into consoles etc, you can tell from many of the design decisions that its been done with a primary focus of making it more accessible to console/mobile/tablet/steamdeck users, sadly at the expense of their historical core userbase, PC gamers.

I wish that more game titles would have different UIs and systems dependent upon the platform they are being played on , that way maybe we could get less games with those crappy rotary wheel inventory systems in them and less games with the crappy hold a key instead of press a key functions as well

In response to your feedback, we’ve identified three key areas that we’re prioritizing work against as quickly as possible. We will share a development roadmap as soon as we can, but our focus is on the following:

  1. Prioritizing UI Improvements: Our top priority is improving the UI. We need some time to digest all of your feedback, but some areas that we're already looking into include making UI interactions more intuitive, improving map readability, fixing areas of polish like formatting, and more. We're committed to getting this right, and will share more details as soon as we can.
  2. Implementing Community-Requested Features: Several key features that we've seen you ask for will be included in upcoming patches as free updates, and we'll continue to work with the community to improve and add to the game. We're still working on exact timing, but can share the following items are being prioritized:
    • Adding Teams to multiplayer games so you can play cooperatively
    • Allowing full player counts in multiplayer in all three Ages through refinements to our Distant Lands system.
    • Allowing you to pick your starting and ending Age to allow for single or double Age games
    • Providing a wider variety of map types
    • Enabling city and religion names to be customized
    • Adding in hotseat multiplayer
  3. Rolling Out Quality-of-Life Updates in Patch 1.1.0 (Deploying in March): Work is already well underway on Patch 1.1.0, which includes fixes and adjustments that were already on our radar. This list includes quality-of-life UI adjustments, ongoing AI balance and improvement, adjustments to diplomacy and crises, plus additional bug fixes

Oh god yeah i didn't even say that.....

We both sit down, host a game, join, no teams... How is this not a thing on release day....it's mind blowing....
It's like they forget everything each release.

Think I'm going to break out Civ6 and wait this out a few months. It's been agggggess since I've played a civ game anyways so it'll all be fresh again to me.

Im all for weird and interesting leaders the absolute more the merrier. I'd love there to be 100 choices by the end. As long as they are full animated and voice scripted.
