What film did you watch last night?

Came across The Valley of Elah last night, premise looked good so decided to watch.. meh, not the best, not the worst. Good performance from TLJ as always though.

The Electric State.
Cliché story, but I was just fascinated by the robots, which were just brilliantly designed and executed. This is one of those very rare movies that does stand up on it's special effects. Well, for me anyway, but I can understand why it wouldn't for other people. 7/10.
Watched this after seeing your post.

Agreed regarding special effects.

I'd say it's a good film for kids/not engaging brain but can't believe it apparently cost £320m to make

I'd give it a 6/10 max, 5/10 seems harsh

The last breath - so-so film based on the true story of a diver who gets trapped at bottom of seabad and runs out of air. Rescue mission engaged. Some bits are quite tense then other times i couldn't care less. 5/10

Ne Zha 2- Animated fantasy adventure from China, biggest grossing animated movie of all time apparently just from Chinese viewings alone. I have not seen the first one (about to start it) but this was really good! 8/10

High Tension / Switchblade Romance - 8/10

Such a grimy, nasty horror film… and one of my favourite ones! Even with the bonkers ‘twist’. One of my favourite film soundtracks too, barring the slightly jarring Muse part. Watched the Second Sight 4K release and it looked great. A notable improvement on the Blu-Ray :)

I remember thinking the twist was impossible given what had happened in the film previously, but I can’t remember what made me think that.

The Electric State. Was watchable but I’ll never see it again.

The Electric State (2025) - 4/10

A kiddified version of Terminator with goofy looking robots, big ideas and big stars but apart from the visuals, none of the elements are used to great effect.

The alternative 90’s style and blend of robots with live action looks good but rather than being humorous, the film focuses on the drama of the story, making some scenes absurd and others just bad.

The film is too long with too many plot holes and recycled ideas and apart from the lead, the other characters’ motivations are lacking or contrived.

Mickey 17 (2025) - 6.5/10

Saw this last week at the cinema. Good performance from Robert Pattinson but the film sort of felt a bit disjointed and just ended leaning to the cringy side a bit too much by the end.

Picture This (2025) - 2/10

With the hotness that is Simone Ashley in a romcom in London you'd expect it to be ok wouldn't you? Well it was pretentious, utter CRINGE and just all of todays modern tropes rolled into one. Zero chemistry with Simone and her romantic counterpart, yet the only real chemistry she does have is with her work partner who just happens to be gay and absolutely brilliant.

I normally have no issues with pretentious, cringey comedies in London like 'Trying' on AppleTV+ but this film is just borderline rubbish.

Watched Counterattack on netflix, basically 5 Mexican special forces get ambushed and hunted by a cartel and have to fight for their lives.
Pretty good little action flick.
7/10

Pulp Fiction.
Hadn't watched it for years but remembered the iconic moments: diner dance, gimp dungeon etc.
Some classic moments but I felt it dragged on a bit.
7/10, maybe 7.5/10 because of Samuel L Jackson.

Have this on my media player and one night was after a movie i knew wouldn't suck, so did a rewatch - 10/10 movie for me.

Kraven the Hunter (2024)

Thankfully Sony has lost enough money on this and most of the other Spider-Man universe turds, that they've finally stopped. At least according to this films Wikipedia page. Fingers crossed.

To be honest I'd have happily turned this off after ten minutes, but we stuck with it and it just got worse. It's total and utter dross in every way.

0/10

No where near as good as Runaway Train (1985) - love that movie.
Got that on Blu-ray somewhere. Been a while since I've seen it but yes it is better than Unstoppable which is a decent way to spend an afternoon but it isn't a classic. If you want classic classic train, then The Train with Burt Lancaster is pretty good.

Runaway Jury - John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, Dustin Hoffman and the late Gene Hackman. Pretty good court drama. Sensationalised story to give it that extra bite to reel the audience. As always Gene demonstrates how good he is at playing the tough mean villian. It tries to give it a little twist but its pretty predictable. Enjoyed it for not watching it in a long while on Prime. 7/10.

The Electric State (2025) - Entertaining and a bit of family fun for the kids. Some nice visuals but that is about it. - 6/10

I really like Unstoppable always thought of if more highly than 6/10, good drama.

Never watched Runaway Train, might have to look it up.
Fun trivia from IMDB

Trivia
Danny Trejo was visiting a friend who was working as a production assistant on the set when he was offered a job as an extra. Edward Bunker recognized Trejo because they served time in San Quentin State Prison together. Bunker helped Trejo get hired as Eric Roberts' boxing coach. Director Andrei Konchalovsky was so impressed with Trejo that he gave him a small role. Trejo later stated that he was staggered to find out that the coaching job earned him $320 per day, which was more than he had ever gotten from a robbery.
