What film did you watch last night?

The Bounty (1984). Seen it countless times, one of my favourites. The most factually accurate film portrayal of the famous mutiny.

A stronger cast is pretty hard to find.

Anthony Hopkins
Mel Gibson
Daniel Day Lewis
Liam Neeson
Laurence Olivier
Edward Fox
Bernard Hill
John Sessions
Phil Davis
Dexter Fletcher
Neil Morrisey

Watched this last night and it was pretty good. Not the type of movie I would go normally go for but what a cast. The production was.decent and the acting was superb. The story although based on true events was somewhat simplitic. It did made me look up to see what happened to Fletcher Christian. Solid 7.5/10 for me.

I’ve read a number of books on the subject, including the one by Richard Hough that this is based on. I only really mention the accuracy because of all the main productions of this story, this is by some margin the closest to the truth (as documented).

One could argue that more should have been made of the miraculous feat of navigation by Bligh on the Bounty’s open launch…..but I think the film stands up well as a sumptuously produced story in its own right.

yeah i was along the same lines, they had provisions for a few weeks but it took months to limp back to the dutch port. Miraculously I read as well the Captain Edwards of the HMS Pandora who was sent to capture the mutineers also did the same thing when the Pandora sank and limped back in small boat on the same journey as Bligh. Incredible how descendants of the Pitcairns live to this day.

Memories of Murders (2003)

Not for me.

I couldn't get on with the uneven tone, which seems to be one of the director's major traits. The constant breaking out of fights was particularly weird and the constant arguments between all of the police officers. Oh, and the two footed drop kicks on anyone saying the wrong thing.

Having said all that, I did find most of it quite watchable but I definitely wouldn't watch it again or recommend it.

5/10

Death of a Unicorn (2025) - 6/10

A mixed production which stays too close to convention and is good, funny and scary but also kind of not.

The plot has all the types of scenes you would expect from a monster movie and brings up some valid points, but they get overshadowed by the unlikeable characters, odd pacing and the CGI creatures.

The creatures look good enough and they are used to good effect, but it shows too much of them too early and the ending didn’t feel right.

Monkey Man - was actually pretty good. Had it on my list for ages and finally got round to it. Plenty of action. 8/10

Love Hurts (2025)

The production company behind John Wick, Nobody and Bullet Train etc. Get plain lazy by just doing a copy and paste of the Nobody script, throw in a couple of Goonies and cross their fingers. The result isn't great but at least it's a lean 83 minutes long and Short Round gets another acting job.

4/10

A Mincecraft movie - never played the game and was expecting the worst but it was watchable with a few funny moments - 6/10
