Baldur's Gate 3

I started a co-op playthrough of this last night, with a guy I play a lot of co-op with. It'll be my second time through the game. He's hosting, so gets "main character" privileges (he hasn't played it before).

While I really liked the game, my main complaint about it is that the companions were all subsumed by the modern obsession that (almost) every party member must be romance-able, meaning that they were all clearly on the "shaggability scale", without any of the weirdos and slightly horrifying eccentrics of the older games (plus no dwarf companions, as they aren't particularly shaggable, and no halflings/gnomes for reasons that should be obvious). So to counter that, I am going to roleplay this time through as... Stinky.

Stinky is a dwarf who does not like bathing. Stinky likes rats. Stinky collects dead rats in Stinky's backpack. Sometimes Stinky touches himself. Sometimes Stinky touches his rats. Sometimes Stinky touches himself with his rats. Stinky wears underpants... sometimes. Stinky goes to the toilet in secret places, which are not usually a toilet. Sometimes underpants are a toilet. Stinky keeps sneaking underpants into companions' backpacks, as a special present.

Stinky definitely not on the shaggability scale. Also, Stinky didn't tell co-op companion, but Stinky might have Dark Urge background.

To be fair in olden ye gate times, after a few ales at the campfire even Stinky could be considered a catch - he's just Asmongold pre-internet.

The ale goggle effect has no boundaries as many a Brit will tell you at 3am on a Saturday night in a town centre circa 2001.

Update:
Played a bit more, have settled on my team setup now:
Me: drunken monk - no alcohol in site so far so can't critique this class yet.
Astarian: hex blade level 1 and all the rest of the levels will be swashbuckler. Have to get to level 4 to pick subclass so I'm nearly there now.
Wyll: hexblade, looking forward to seeing what it's like as a pure build.
Shadow heart: going to try a light cleric, heard they pretty good against undead which should help in Act 1 and 2.

Each to their own but you might want a tank in there. Take out Wyll maybe and go with a tank.

Re-reading this, I think you've spelt "Lae'zel" wrong for one of the team?

Good suggestion but I don't plan on keeping enemies alive long enough to aggro them.

Edit: just tried my first fight with Wyll as a hexblade. Blinken heck he turned the harpy fight right around for me very quickly with Eldrich blast, and his purple blade move.

I'm on my second play through. On my first in Act1 I went to the crèche to complete Act1. Do I'm gonna try the underdark this time to finish act 1.

Apparently you can do both, which I guess you get to the point where it tells you are about to leave act 1 then you just turn around and go back. Has anyone done this?

Edit: quick Google...You're only locked out of the Mountain Pass and Act 1 areas (including the Underdark) once you progress past a certain point of no return warning message at the end of a big dungeon in Act 2.

I'm thinking about playing this game with another friend or two, I feel in general a bit daunted by this game so I was wondering if anyone has any good tips, tricks or things like mind set to have when playing this game.

Cheers

Don't be tempted to play it as a completionist. Go with the flow and plan to do more than one playthrough, otherwise you can expect a bit of burnout by the time you get to Act 3. I had to take a BG3 holiday for a few months!

Just go with it and see what happens. I found that sometimes the good guy move isnt always the best option!

Lock in though its going to be a long coop!

I've just got this to play on the steam deck while baby is sleeping. I'm totally new to the whole franchise and d&d in general (I've played board games like scythe and gloomhaven so I'm not completely ignorant). Is there a really good walkthrough of the mechanics of how things work like when to/when not to go for a long rest? I've just got out of the ship but have used up my spell and bard points, should I take a long rest? How to figure out what kind of spell and ability combos will be good?
Any good videos or websites without too many spoilers just to get the basics that seem to be already presumed by the tutorial tooltips?
I rolled a violinist bard with a majestic tache.

Honestly, just play the game and roll with the punches. There are enough tooltips in game to keep you informed about the various mechanics. Don't try and min/max things ( which is what you''ll end up doing by watching videos, tutorials etc ). Most quests and scenarios in this game can be resolved by taking multiple routes. A big part of the fun with this game is forging your own path/journey, not retreading the footsteps of some YouTuber.

Thanks, will do. Been a good start already, I'm sad I didn't play the first two back in the day.
I didn't realise I had to loot the guys as I went in that first big fight, that there wouldn't be a second chance to loot them, nor even to cheese the demon (I got him with 10 turns of ROFL which was fun but I then just ran past to do the thing).
