*** The official 2025 MacBook Air 13" and 15" thread (it has the M4 chip and everything!) ***

I think it is time to replace my 2018 MBP, one of my worst ever Apple Purchase (£2300 that cost me!)....and replace it with an entry level MBA this time. I can see both John Lewis and Amazon has it for £899, is there anywhere cheaper? I don't think it will be less on EDU anyway .

There are discounts on new M3 Macbook Airs in many stores.

If you need the bigger 15", its available for just under £950 with M3, 16Gb and 512Gb.

It's for travel, so 13" is preferable. If only there is a M3 MBP with 16G ram for like £1000....I would jump on that.

Slept on it, 24G ram and 512SSD will be more future proof than the 10% speed bump.

It also means I can save some photos inside the machine than always having to carry an external SSD.

So I ordered the M3, with 3.75% cash back should end up being £840.

Ffs the 13" M3 in midnight black was available with 512GB SSD and 24GB RAM For £880. I sat there like a numpty debating in my head about it, only for it to go out of stock!

Spent ages deciding whether to FOMO for the 15" M3 with the same spec (512/24GB) for £1090 but I don't really need the extra size and weight.

And no way I'm paying £900 for a base spec 256GB/12GB M4 for £900.

Just get the 15". Because the alternative is going to cost you £1400 for a 24/512 M4.

True but I'm not sure I even really need a laptop or a MBA. When I'm at home I do everything on my desktop.

And it's a fair bit of change for a device I may or may not use a lot.

I only going to use mine for travel, but it is something that I keep for like 8 years.

Right I pulled the trigger. Collecting it tomorrow morning. Pretty happy with the value in the end, 13" M3 MBA with 24GB RAM and 512GB SSD for £927.

Lads what I need some advice on is docking/KVM switching etc.

My current setup at my desk is:
- a wall mounted LG 48CX.
- Desktop PC with a wired ethernet connection, and USB peripherals like MX Keys + MX Master Mouse, webcam, wireless receiver for steelseries headset, and a couple of charging cables.

What I'd like to do is have it so that when I'm at home, if for some reason I want to work from the MBA rather than my desktop, I can just plug a single cable into the thunderbolt port of the MBA and seamlessly use all my peripherals (mainly KB+M) from it, and press a button and have the peripherals in use by the desktop.

I gather I need a KVM Switch for this?

So it'll be

Desktop
-> HDMI to Switch
-> Some cable to Switch

MBA
-> Thunderbolt to Switch

Switch
-> USB Peripherals e.g. KB + M + Headset
-> HDMI out to LG OLED

I obviously want to maintain 4K 120Hz 10bit with both devices.

Any recommendations for the best devices/ways to achieve this?

Congrats getting one.

No idea about the KVM though, you might want to start a new thread for that. But someone in GD post what you bought thread got one of these. He is raving about it.

I think that one is doing KVM over the network which is a bit beyond what I need!

Ended up buying these, and will hope it works for what I need.

The plan is

MBA -> USBC to Sabrent Dock -> HDMI Out and USB C Out to KVM
PC -> USB-A to USB-C and HDMI Out to KVM

KVM
- USB Peripherals in
-> HDMI out to LG OLED.

The only bit that worries me slightly is the single USB cable from the MBA going to the dock which then splits that into HDMI and USB C, and whether that'll actually carry enough data to maintain 4K @ 120Hz. Fingers crossed!

All set up now, it's very VERY close in size to my old 2018 MBP
