Minecraft (online Lego essentially)

Have you tried both the in-browser and standalone versions? Maybe change the graphics settings in options?

Well, originally the browser version wouldn't work, so i had to upgrade my drivers (Bearing in mind this is on an old 915GM laptop) but now the downloaded one doesn't work :( it'll work on my PC but im normally downstairs so like to play it there :)

At €10 a head, 380,350 people who have bought it, this guy has already made €3.8M. Server costs won't be too bad as most worlds are on players own servers, all he has to pay for is the website, login and update servers. I heard that he's taken on 2 or 3 other people to develop minecraft to give him time to spend on some other projects.

All that in 15 months. When I read that myself a week ago I thought it was 38,000 and I was impressed at that! This guy is a great game designer, he started development and within 1 month had a public alpha underway. That's what most of us from the early days of this thread were playing. I think 3 or 4 months in he started having content that you only got if you bought the alpha version, special costumes and such. Even with just that a lot of people were buying it.

Now the game has truly gone global, I know people from every corner of the internet and the real world who are playing it now. It's started to get coverage from mainstream media which is when you know a game like this is about to explode. This guy better be prepared to have even more money coming his way damn soon :)

We really, really need an OcUK MP server for this :p

What sort of connection do you guys figure it would take? Dedicated machine in a data centre or just any old machine?

Me and some friends are playing multiplayer and the guy hosting just has an upload of 1.3mbs. He says that it's more of a hit on the cpu and memory side. So you can do it on just any current good spec PC with a good connection.

That's pretty cool.

Where do people get all these resources though! I've spent ages digging and probable found less than 150 iron.

Those tracks are 8 iron per 16 pieces aren't they? Must have taken him ages to find it all, or is there some kind of mode I'm missing out on where you already have resources?

How big is the world!

Ive only played Multiplayer Classic, the free one - and the worlds are big, but I mean thats 3 minutes (sped up i assume) and 2 day/night cycles from one end to the other!

Is it just a huge open ended world in the Alpha version?

You can download an inventory editor where you can change values for items.

I did read that the Alpha version 'expands' as you reach the edge of the map...but don't quote me on that and the reviewer may have just been being stupid... :D

I dare not venture 10ft from my hidey hole to be honest!!! Too many scarys!

Making a nice tunnel system though...Got a random lava flow thing I found too =/

8 times larger than the Earth! And if for example you covered the whole map in buildings, does the game remember them? Or is it just in the segment you reside in until you reach the edge for the game to generate more?

Im actually thinking about buying this one now, although im not very patient which has been the main thing putting me off.

Well, you save the game on exit...and every time i exit the filesize gets bigger...so i presume it saves everywhere you go (with regards to single player anyway)

Which reminds me...on the alpha single player, where do the files save? Locally or on his server? As i'd like some local copys really just incase :p

What do you need in terms of specs to host a server? Sitting on a 22/1.5 Mb connection here and have a spare PC...
