AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

We know little if anything about Mantle yet so why he would base his decision on that is strange.

True Audio = 3D sound with marketing name

You asked for AMD exclusive features and I listed two of them. You don't get to say "they don't count because I don't like them". Other people might consider them important to their requirements.

These are only your opinions on Mantle and True Audio, your opinion does not = fact. Just because you feel these aren't worthy features does not make it true, nor does it exclude them as features exclusive to AMD GPUs. I dislike GPU Phyx, I have a GTX780 and I honestly think GPU PhysX detracts from my gameplay experience because of all the extra unrealistic debris that disappears in front of my eyes. Though I recognise it is a feature unique to Nvidia and as such other individuals may consider it to be a vital requirement.

Yay, I finally got approved to post!

Anyway, I am very interested in True Audio. My sound card died a while back, and I haven't gotten around to getting a new one, and while on-board sound is a lot better than it used to be, it still isn't as good as dedicated sound processing. I am very, very interested in this feature.

As far as Mantle goes, the possibility is exciting to me, especially as more devs continue to adopt it. See, we have to think about it as a free performance upgrade in select titles (if it does indeed work)....think refined drivers right away for certain games. Is it a game changer? Certainly not. Does it matter to NVidia folks? Definitely not. Is it a potential boon to AMD people? Sure, what the heck!

That being said, I almost bought a 780 a month or so ago. Thankfully I decided to wait. I don't know (at this point) if I'll get a 7990 (for $599, darn good price!), 290x (I have 2 on pre-order from here), or a 780ti (depends on price/perf, same as 290x). But put 145 bucks down for each 290x, with promise of a full-refund, no reason not to pre-order the 290x, and I'm glad I did.

2 features wow, one of them having nothing to do with graphics. I didn't say they didn't count either, but over the last couple of days nvidia have shown features that I think benefit games and gamers more than some fancy audio and a low level console style API that we know nothing about yet other than it will net you better performance. At least nvidia bothered to explain and show their new technology off during the conference.

We'll have to wait till next year to see which of them or maybe both of them really pulled it off though. Hopefully everything goes well for both sides to drive the industry on and create more competition.

cant they buy trousers that fit
im not sure they dress themselves

thx for post :)

He (Carmack) spent all his money building rockets :P

In all seriousness people should do a little more research before taking cheap shots at him besides which a lot of the gaming we do today wouldn't have been possible without the break throughs he has made over the years its easy not to see the knock on effects of his work and the progress in other areas of gaming thats enabled.

While TrueAudio may not be technically graphics related (other than it's an AMD graphics card feature) I do see it as something I hope gets embraced by developers so that we can finally have the awesome A3D quality/style positional 3D sounds that we used to have all those years ago and better.

I do fear that unless the next gen consoles have some version of it, it may not get very widely adopted.

Carmack is probably the person that got me really into a 3d cards, I can remember my jaw hitting the floor when i first saw GL quake on a voodoo, I was a bit of a idiot then bought into the power vr marketing and bought one of those instead.

God that was such a good time the feeling that each driver could gain you 20% or more in frame rate :)

TrueAudio is something I'll be keeping an eye (uh yeah) on - theres some vague hints from the architecture (sideways memory access to the GPU, etc.) of it that it might go beyond binaural reproduction and actually do environment simulation down the road and not just EAX style this is an underwater environment, this is a cathedral, or whatever but actual realtime calculations based on the angles, positions and material properties of the geometry in the scene - I got to experience an early version of this with A3D and the difference to 2D panned let alone directsound3d, etc. is pretty mind blowing when done properly.

TrueAudio may not be related to graphics, but it certainly is related to gaming - and isn't that why we want these cards in the first place?

Retailers know that the price of GPUs are subject to change right until release. The original newegg price makes me think that maybe AMD allowed them to post that price to see the reaction of those following the 290x release... maybe

probably not, clearly have other things to think about, like;

what foodstuffs can be safely cooked on a 290x backplate under full load?

He made Rage. LOL. Nuff said.

He also made some of the best shooters ever made and moved the graphics industry forward in a huge way. Sure, his last game wasnt the best but the mechanics of it were still excellent and he still tried to move forward with the mega textures thing. Right or wrong he tried and should be applauded for it. Being an actual rocket scientist as well just one of his thoughts before breakfast would prob accomplish more than most people do in their entire life

Buy what you think is best and let others decide based on the information come retail. All this brand smooching is so old now.
Both Mantle, Gsync and shadow play are all intriguing.
