*** The iPad Air thread ***

The US Amazon site is decidedly less subtle!

Personally I have no problem with it provided they only make genuine claims which those are

Just a shame that manufacturers besides Apple have yet to learn that bigger (or in this case smaller) numbers alone don't make for a better tablet

However this one from samsung was a step to far but it is hilarious how the only way people to get people to say the things they do in this ad is to pay them because it would never, ever happen in real life

Spoke to Apple today about the iTunes landscape issue. They are apparently not aware of it, but will report it and look into it. Spent most of the call trying to convince me that no product launch the size of iPads or iPhones will ever go 100% smooth all over the world. Suppose there could be some truth in that. Just hope they get it fixed ASAP.

EDIT: I'm also a little disappointed that you can't stream music without downloading it. Sooner that gets sorted the better.

moan moan moan nothings perfect

I think it must have you who I spoke to.

Another question. Nothing's broken, but all the songs I download from my cloud won't play in Djay 2. It says it's either because it's in the cloud or drm protected. It's not in the cloud so it must be drm.

I thought all itunes songs were drm free now. The ones I have purchased on my PC over the weekend and downloaded are playing fine in Djay 2.

I'm currently restoring my iPad after booting it into recovery mode. It was on an endless reboot/BSOD cycle and this seems to be the only way to restore it :(

The 5th Gen iPad screen still has an Air gap? Did not know this...

The only really bad thing about the display is the air gap that Apple has left between the LCD itself and the top layer of glass. This has the side-effect of making the screen easier to repair if that's your thing, but compared to a device with a fused LCD and glass like the iPhone 5S or the Retina MacBook Pro the colors and contrast are a bit more muted. The problem gets worse in direct sunlight, which washes the iPad's screen out more drastically than the iPhone's or the MacBook's.

The difference between a fused screen and an unfused one is more subtle than, say, the difference between a Retina display and a non-Retina display, or the difference between a TN LCD panel and an IPS LCD. Still, given both Apple's push to make the full-size iPad thinner and lighter and the company's push to fuse the LCD and glass layers in its other products, the Air's, um, air gap is puzzling.

Got mine last night, upgraded from an ipad 2, which was getting a bit long in the tooth.
So I upgraded for speed purposes and it does seem snappier.

Well my purchase is going on hold as it looks like work is going to be supplying all staff with a tablet next year, hopefully it will be the iPad air!

Yes it does and I'm glad as i repair screens on ipads with my business.

Also comparing an unfused screen being the same difference as a non retina to retina screen is a retarded comparison.

The quote says that is is a more sublte difference, not the same.

And I would imagine that it uses an unfused screen to reduce likely hood of damage to the panel
On the iPhone the glass is over a smaller area and therefore is much more ridged so pressing on it will not flex, bend, or damage the panel below
Whereas on the ipad, the glass has a lot more give in it and as such it will bend which has the potential to damage the panel during stressful tapping sessions

lol I couldn't care less if your repair screens.

Its ironic that you call the quote retarded.

I'd argue you saying it STILL has an air gap is a crazy thing to be worrying about... and the fact he repairs screens for a living says he probably actually knows more about them than you.

Without reading any articles on the web I'd guess the small gap there for one makes repair easier, and two, reduces the chance of damaging the TFT on impact. Some kind of bonded screen on a large device would be a nightmare when you damage it.

It's a good decision by Apple I rekon.

Ordered 2 of these with engraving for presents for our parents at the weekend, the arrived Tuesday morning. Very impressed, was expecting a longish wait.

How is everybody finding the battery life?

I absolutely hate the "I'm a Mac/PC" rubbish they used.

I'm guessing the air gap will be there to help reduce the possibility of completely destroying the screen on impact, as something like the rMBP is less likely to get heavy physical use and bounced across the floor.

It doesn't bother me too much tbh, but an air gap increases fresnel reflections. Which means you run the screen brighter than needed to compensate in bright environments.

And a bonded screen is more pleasant - its like the everything is floating on the surface.

Haz only cares about repairability which does not concern me.

If that were true then why does the iPhone not have an air gap?

None of this bothers me as much as the lack of 2GB RAM though. :p
