OcUK Dieters Progress Thread

Thanks :) From what Ive read and been told you should keep your heart rate between 60-80% of maximum which is (220 - your age). This keeps it in your aerobic zone which is optimal for fat burn. When you push above 80% you enter the anaerobic zone which then converts muscle to energy which is not really what you want for fat burning and is as Gilly said earlier.
No fear, I'm working within my range :) My min/max based on age and resting heart rate, are higher than those written on the machine. I've found that I'm working just below my max on both the cross trainer and treadmill. Excellent!

Based on GordyR's advice earlier on this thread, I did my Body Pump workout first, and then moved on to cardio.

Right, I think I'm going to buy myself some new trainers this afternoon. I've started to get blisters off the ones I have now because they're all worn out, and there's an excellent thread in the SA about running, and trainers, so I'm going to a running shop in Notts to try and get a pair :)

Something for the girls: Asda do sports bras for £4 - and in black too! I tried it and am well impressed. Means I can buy a load and not have to rush my washing through!

 What cup size do they go up to? This would be excellent, as I'm struggling with just the one and can't afford to spend £30 on another.

Got my new trainers. Went to a place in Notts, and they made me take off my socks and trainers. Had a look at my bruised feet, and at the way I stand. Told me that I should get a half size up to stop my toes blistering/bruising, and chose a trainer for me which had support for my instep, because apparently my feet are just starting to roll in. They're very comfy and I'm dead chuffed with them. Looking forward to their first proper trial tomorrow :D I'm sure I'll be able to run at least 10mph faster in them ;)

Just relaxing after playing my 3rd 90 minutes of football in 3 weeks after playing only around 3 times a year previously. I have a huge blister on my big toe, stud marks above my shin and am limping on my other leg. I feel like I've accomplished something though :) Had a pint after the game and treated myself to two light cream cheese and smoked salmon bagels for lunch which were lush.

Hopefully by Monday I will have lost another 2lbs and be at the 13 stone mark :)
Unfortunately that may not happen this week as I'll be watching the superbowl tomorrow night which may involve quite snacky food and a bit of beer, though we will see!

My feet roll in apparently, supposedly it's going to play havoc with y shins in later life. My mates girlfriend is a chiropodist and she's offered to make me some insole thingies. Might have to take her up on it.

He said it was only slightly, and not to get too worried about it. The trainers should sort it out. I never knew!!! Glad I went along, now. I'll certainly keep an eye on it though.

OK here's my go at posting a recipe, I made it earlier this evening

Balti Chicken Curry for 4

Ingredients:

1 tbsp veg oil (just enough)
2 onions cut in half and sliced
2 tsp of cumin seeds
a few cardamom pods 4-6
a couple of cloves of garlic finely chopped or smushed (as my kids say)
a couple of red chilli's, or a tsp of powder i guess, deseeded and finely chopped (add more for fire)
Enough chicken for 4, I used breast meat (skin removed) here but if you
adjust the cooking times you can use on the bone say 5 minutes longer.
8-10 medium tomatoes chopped up
a big pinch of salt
1 tsp of Garam Masala
3-4 fl oz water
corriander

I have mine with plain boiled Basmati rice but that's up to you

Method:

1. prepare the ingredients

2. Throw the cumin seeds and cardamom pods into a hot wok and fry till they pop then throw in the onions and brown them

3. Add the chicken and brown that too.

4. Throw in the rest of the ingredients bar the corriander

5. Simmer for 20 minutes or until the chicken is cooked (taste test)

6. Throw in the corriander

7. Cook a little bit more just to get the flavour of the corriander into the mix

8. Serve on a bed of rice

It's a quick basic Balti but it's missing out the cream and stuff so it's less fattening :)

Got room for one more in this thread?

I need to shed a lot of weight and have done for many years. I suffer from all sorts of problems but the worst is definately the back pain which stops me walking after less than 1/4 of a mile :( As it is I cannot even walk to work and resort to driving a little under 1 mile :(

My biggest problem is definately over eating whilst at work. If I can cut back on this I am confident I can lose a fair bit of weight without doing anything :)

I have no starting weight that I can work from however as I have no scales here at home. The last time I remeber being weighed was on a hospital visit for a long term medical issue that I have had from birth (VSD if anyone cares). The number is not something I would care to share however.

Hopefully with a little help from my parents I should be able to make some initial progress and save some money as well!

Not read much of the thread however so I don't know how others are doing.

Cybermyk - That looks really tasty, and I have all the ingredients. Might give it a try at some point! Good one for students too, because you can always freeze the curry in portions and re-heat it :)

Psymonkee - I strongly advise that you sit down and read through the whole thread. There's loads of good advice on here, both dietwise and regarding exercise.

If you're overeating at work, I'd strongly suggest that you make your own lunch and don't take any money in. You can snack through the day, but take healthy snacks like nuts & raisens, carrot/celery sticks or fruit. Also, make sure that you always eat breakfast. It really is the most important meal of the day! Read through the thread for loads of helpful tips and facts though :)

I used to eat sweets and cakes at work during breaks etc. Now I have a bowl of porridge with dried cranberries and chopped nuts for breakfast which keeps me all the way till lunch time and no need for snacking.

The best way to try to lose weight is to excercise and control what you eat. Although the idea of a gym can be quite boring, it isnt that bad at all and when you start to see results, it gives you some encouragement. I joined a sponsored slim for charity at work just to give that extra incentive to keep me on track.

If you go to the gym, there are machines you can use that are low impact, so you wont hurt as much as you think or perhaps try swimming. Good luck though, hope it goes well. :)

Well you've made the first step by mentioning to people on here about it and asking for help.

Firstly if you haven't already I'd get a doctors opinion as to what you should avoid doing for your back.

Secondly, if you do decide to join a gym make sure you look at a few and choose one where they actually care about their clients and ask you to fill out a medical form and give you a full induction.

Thirdly, no matter how unfit etc someone is there's always a level of exercise they can do that will work for them. I work with all sorts of people of all ages, sizes and fitness levels and every one of them with the right guidance has progressed.

Good luck!

Well I did a 5 mile bike ride today and a load of housework. I made garlic chicken and roasted veg for lunch. Tea was just me and my eldest so we just had croissants and fruit. I've not done bad today. I'm also off the cider and vodka and I'm sticking to a bit of red wine til I feel like something is doing me good.

I might point out here I'm not really overweight at 5ft 10 and 11st 5 but I'm 45, asthmatic (gave up smoking 15 years ago) and I have a desk job. I just don't want to go downhill and I'd like to be able to keep up with the kids.

I'll post more recipes as I do them if I think they're worthy.

Psymonkee, good luck mate and keep us updated :)

6 second Abs

thinking of getting this because i dont like any of the Ab machines at the gym and im not strong enough for that big ball (the one you sit on) yet.

Does it work or is it a gimmick.

I'd probably say it's a bit of a gimmick. Only way to get decent abs is through hard work.
Train them heavy not high rep (if you need to add resistance just hold a weight to your chest). Crunches, full crunches, jack knifes. Remember they need rest as well.

Oh and they'll also get a great workout as stibilisers when you do heavy lifting in things such as deadlifts and squats.

If you want them to be visible you need to havce a decent diet as well.

Can't be more concise now as am drunk. Might edit this tomorrow.

Thanks for the support guys :)

I shall post a wee report of how I get on tomorrow with not snacking at breaks. I'll leave some drink in the car so as to not be tempted by the pile of creme eggs by the Kiosk tills whne buying some form of liquid refreshment :)

Here goes :)
