10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

It would be a nice feature if you could turn off unneeded memory for example running a 24gb card with 8gb or 12gb as this would reduce heat and power consumption a little bit.

It is very rare that I use more than 8gb for anything.
If bandwidth is going to benefit anything it will be the 2160p results.

Unfortunately the above is not happening.

The 3090 is still over 30% faster at 4k than the 3080 while only having 20% more cores and a lower clock speed than the 3080

please explain

The 3090 is 31% faster than the 3080 at 2160p

The 3090 is 49% faster than the 3080 at 1080p

Please explain.

It is not down to memory bandwidth or capacity as the 3090 performance is falling away badly at 2160p.

Godfall is developed by Counterplay games who don't have a Wikipedia entry and their only previous game was a turn based card game.

It's also a PS5 console exclusive, PS5 launch title and heavily marketed by and for sony.

It is %CURRENT_YEAR%

The simplest explanation is the game performance is buggy on PC.

It's really random indeed. Oh well if anything it appears the 3090 is a beast in next gen exclusive games, maybe let's hope so

If you're going by vRAM usage of the TechPowerup.com article then that's wrong. He's measuring that using GPU-z, I got an email response from W1zzard to confirm this.

GPU-z measures video memory allocated, it does not tell how much of that memory is in use. W1zzard now knows this but showed no interest in correcting it, which for me throws into question the work done at techpowerup.com

As @Disco P said above it most likely a buggy game.

Tech site reviewers should not use such titles to compare performance.

The 3090 is a beast of a card and will get even better when NVidia get to grips with the drivers for the Ampere SKUs, I am hoping to see at least another 10% performance from them.

I have pointed out errors to them in the past which they agreed with and then did nothing to correct.

Yeah, they are losing credibility slowly with time. I trust Hardware Unboxed a lot more.

Once TPU found those results they should have done further digging as to why it is the case.

The 3090 is only 10% faster than the 3080 for gaming. This is very underwhelming for a flagship card. The 2080 Ti was a good 30% faster than the 2080 at launch itself. While drivers will improve performance, the 3080 will improve as well so the gap between the 2 would continue to be small.

I still think the 3080/3090 situation was created to maximize profits from specific market segments.

People who want meaningful performance for their money have the 3080. People who will spend any amount of money to have "the best" can buy the 3090.

Nvidia is covering all the bases. (Until AMD's cards are available at least)

I get that but in the last generations NVIDIA used to extract 50% premium for 30% more performance with the 2080 Ti and the 1080 Ti. That's just not visible during this generation for some reason. Even if the 3080 Ti launches, its costs 50% more for 10% more performance.

I think both card will get faster with better drivers but the 3090 will also pull away from the 3080 by another 10%.

The reason I say this is because the 3090 has about 20% more active silicon than the 3080 but at the moment the cards are poorly optimised by the drivers.

On the hardware unboxed video link I posted above it show 3080 getting 56fps and 3090 getting 59fps at 4K for Assassins Creed Valhalla. Lol.

So yeah, the gap should technically get bigger.

AMD may just crush both on this title. Hopefully :D
