10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

Found myself here now, wow! Sold my GTX 1080 for a good price. Can buy a RTX 3070 by topping up 250 dollars (managed to grab on Amazon by constant F5ing)... I plan on staying 1080p and then upgrade to a 5600x... But VRAM issue is really there. I saw some Horizon Zero Dawn comparisons and it really looked horrible.
.
You will be perfectly fine with a 3070 at 1080p for a long time, I wouldn't worry. Remember bandwidth matters as well, and at 1080p the gddr6 will work better than at higher res where the requirements increase by a lot.

Dedicated vram is what the game is actively using
Ok then, so I broke the 10GB barrier with a very heavily modded 10 year old game and it's still very playable at 4k. This is why I love PC gaming, modders work miracles. :D

Hardly a regular use-case scenario for most people I know, but as someone who also mods the boobs of off my favourite older games it's good to see the benefit of more VRAM.

Don't know why people are still getting their panties in a twist over this, well tbf, it only seems to be people who don't have a 3080 or people with >10GB GPUs that are making a big deal out of it :D :p Perhaps they're jelly that they couldn't get a FE for £650 or trying to justify their £800+ GPUs.. :p

If anyone wants to be informed properly whether 10GB will be a problem or not.... just go and watch many youtube videos and read reviews from people who actually "own" the card and you'll see a 3080 is one of the best cards for all resolutions including 4k and that 10GB has not been a problem in any current game so far, even at 4k and most likely won't be a problem for the next couple of years in the "majority" of games... And when/if it does become a problem for peoples gaming needs then I'm sure most of the current 3080 owners could afford to upgrade to the newer and better cards anyway....
Ironically, the only people who are making a big deal out of it are the people like yourself with daft arguments like this that have been done to death throughout this thread and then adding "majority" of games in quote tags as though that doesn't actually imply that you think that there will be potential VRAM limitations in upcoming games. I mean really, what the **** do some of you guys do for day jobs where you don't need any critical/analytical thinking skills whatsoever? :p

Shock horror..... as time goes on, hardware becomes less capable of running newer games on "max" settings at a constant 60/70/80+ fps?!?! :D

By the time 10GB becomes a problem, the likes of a 3080 and even 6800xt/3090/6900xt aren't going to have enough grunt anyway.... Most people will have moved onto nvidia 40xx/50xx or amds 7xxx/8xxx come the time and not for VRAM but for sheer raw power, improvements in ray tracing perf.

Lets put it this way, give me a 3080 10GB over a 2080ti 11GB any day of the week ;)

It's a dumb argument this whole thread.

Exactly. No one did. Just a strawman they like to use.

Richdog, gives people a hard time on his high horse, calls them mugs for buying a 3090, then goes buys one himself. Nuff said. Lol :D

Couldnt think of the word but that was it 'mugs' lol.

We did have a laugh about the strawmen at the time didnt we? :)

Exactly. Like I said in a post recently, give me a 3080 even over a Titan RTX 24GB which is better than a 2080Ti.

Ah yeah forgot the rtx titan had 24GB!

zOMG, how is it possible that a 3080 with a measly 10GB VRAM is beating a gpu with 24GB VRAM, what kind of black magic is this?!?! :p

:D

Look at call of duty there, rtx titan is using more VRAM but they both look the same from IQ and the 3080 has higher FPS including the lows and both have pretty much the exact same frame latency graph so clearly, VRAM ain't helping here, is it.....

Im still waiting on the answer of will resizeable bar make this moot point become a thing (as it will expose the 3080) otherwise yes your totally right.

The 'mugs' that bought the 3090 will ofc not have this issue! ;)

Yup I expect gpus with more vram to get a better boost with SAM/resize bar but it will also bring a boost for all gpus regardless of the amount of vram.

Another thing to remember is that consoles only have 16GB of memory in total i.e. that 16GB is not purely just for the GPU, it is shared.

Either way, re-size bar/sam is not going to give the gpus the required grunt/sheer power that the next lot of gpus will have.

Indeed we did :)

Yep. Yeah but mr high horse and his abundance of analytical/critical thinking power says otherwise, so we plebs must be wrong. Lol.

What kind of performance lift are you expecting it will bring over the 3080 though? I can’t imagine the gap being big. We are likely talking about single digit figures counted on one hand in most cases where it actually benefits a said game?

People above complaining about strawmans and then you post this lovely gem.

Not that you or those above care.
