10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

Just looked the new GPU Hierarchy thread. Seems that my 3070 is in the same tier as the 6900 XT. Best part is Matt agrees as not only did he not take issue with the list, he gave it a thumbs up

It's a nice idea so gave it a like. As you've just highlighted though, it is flawed to say the least when you look at overall performance.

Didn't feel it was worth providing my feedback as I had a feeling others would question the logic of the list which is what we've already seen.

And ultimately, the 6900 XT could be in tier F and I still wouldn't care.

I'll never forget joker (youtuber) with his 3080ti having his fps plummet to 5 fps then he said he went to take a screenshot to share on twitter but his fps just magically went back up, it's magic...

This did happen to me when trying benchmarks

Well, I said I'd try it at 4k as well. Set it all up, ran the benchmark and...

Avg fps 3
Max fps 5
Min fps 2.

That's everything maxed with HD textures. Turning them off, but leaving everything else maxed gets me pretty much a solid 60fps (max rate of my 4k TV)

And if you look on ubi forums, you'll see 3090 owners reporting fps drops too and there was a thread on here with a 3090 experiencing drops as well but of course, when it came to them, apparently it is a "system/local issues"....

But nope, it's only vram and absolutely nothing else at play here....


On a separate note, was playing far cry new dawn over the weekend and imo, it looks better than FC 6, textures are defo much more detailed. Looks glorious in HDR on the AW QD-oled panel.

zero performance problems here, no idea what these "drops" are you speak of

Lads, we have confirmation that AMD will not be increasing vram for their next gen cards. Matt has already started to hunker down to defend his position as Nvidia will likely be the ones with more vram next gen it seems

Never heard of that game having vram issues. I would have imagined Matt and his posse would have been all over it

Chances are he either is just looking at allocated vram or has a problem with his system like some other dude did a while ago where he always had much higher vram usage than everyone in a particular game as I recall.



You are probably right Matt. Good thing next gen cards with more vram are around the corner then I suppose

I have not had any issues since completing Dying Light 2. As far as I recall that has been the only game where I had a few vram issues.

You must be drunk again Matt. It is the 3070 that has issues in Resident Evil Village at 4K, not the 3080. The 3080 actually beats the ridiculously priced 6900XT if you look close

I clearly said before posting that link that there was no evidence (which would clearly mean no tests by any credible source), so I do not see how you would jump to that conclusion. The reason I used that link was to show that as of right now 10gb is perfectly fine thus far

I would not worry. They will have all working in about 18-24 months. Just before Hopper comes out

You know me Matt, purchased a few AMD cards from you over the years, I am not a fanboy and have had more AMD cards than Nvidia. Just happens to be the case the 3080 suits me better on this occasion. I never keep cards for too long, so won't be long until my main rig is rocking an AMD card again. I have more than one PC in the house and the other monitor does both freesync and is g-sync compatible. That has a AMD card in it

The 3080Ti has the claimed required 12GB of VRAM.

Again, there was no dispute regarding the VRAM requirements of FC6's texture pack. What was of interest was why it requires 12GB of VRAM, as the visuals certainly didn't qualify it, and the obvious sponsorship deal with AMD on 17%(?) market share against Nvidia's 83%(?). A good move by AMD in an attempt to claw some market share, but a bad deal for consumers.
