1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Right, grabbed one of these earlier today. Should arrive with me on Wednesday. In preparation for it turning up, can someone point me in the right direction as far as clocking it to @4.0Ghz (what my current i7 920D0 is sat at) with what I need to change in the BIOS etc? Also, I take it I should upgrade the BIOS on the Asus P6X58D-E first before pulling the 920D0 out? I'll be happy with 4Ghz, running a Hyper 612S cooler which keeps things nice and cool with the 920 so the 5650 should be good to go in there.

Thanks in advance and my apologies if this has (more than likely) been asked before by a Xeon n00b, but this is a rather large forum thread!! :D

**EDIT** - Oh, and lol.....

Check THIS THREAD I started a ages ago on the subject, most X58 based systems can run in 'Flex Mode' with 4 sticks of RAM fitted which gives you Triple Channel mode as normal for the first three sticks and the 4th stick runs in a type of single channel mode. There are images in the above thread describing it and what slots the RAM sticks need to go in.

Ah right. I don't think I can keep my existing 6 GiB with the new RAM since they'd require completely different voltages (1.65 & 1.5 V). I have a 4 GiB 1.5 V stick elsewhere but that is only rated for 1333 MHz so that wouldn't work either. Basically I'll be stuck with 16 GB dual channel, but that's fine. I don't envisage buying more RAM until I get a DDR4 system.

Hi guys. Just got X5670 for 80 quid (Collected myself in Hampshire). With new Bios F3 on Guerrilla G1 works well. Just wanted to ask how far i can go with Air Thermalright Ultra 120?
What voltage i need to look if i want to go to 4.2ghz?
thank you

Do theese run hotter/cooler than an i7 920/30? I've owned both of theese and have clocked them both to 4.2ghz on around 1.300v. Still have the 930 but may get a 5650. Cooler on the 930 is a thermalright ultra extreme 120 but also have a k2 dual tower taken from the system in sig, iirc with it the 920 hit 67c max under p95.

I believe the P6 should work with latest BIOS

Should have no problem getting to 4.2 and remember the i7 will still fetch 25-30 quid

If the i7 has been in there for years be very very careful taking it out. Exceptionally easy to bend the socket pins particularly if your heatsink has been firmly seated.

Hey setter, I remember back when I first overclocked my 920 that you were very helpful with info in clocking it, ta. I expect my Xeon 5650 to arrive sometime tomorrow, also using an Asus P6X58D-E board - can anyone here who uses the same board post their BIOS settings or let me know what to tweak to quickly and easily get it up to 4 Ghz?

Cheers.
