1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Right chaps.
It has beena very long time since I have strolled into the world of the overclock.
having set up my 17 920 many years ago, i haven't touched it inbetween.

I have a pt6 deluxe v2
I would appreciate it, if someone would walk my hand through the exact settings I require in each screen to set up the 6 core xeon chip, as i plan a little swapover this weekend or next depending on available time.
I have memory timed at 1333 and would welcome details of that also.
Been far to long, the BIOS screens are completely alien to me now.

I'm happy to screen grab all of my setting I'm using and post or email them over or whatever. My chip is a bit of a dud compared to some others on here, as it's only stable at 4.2 to 4.4ghz, but I've got my memory running running nearly at it's rated speed of 2400mhz using a mixture of XMP settings with a few adjustments here and there.

What memory are you using? I did have DDR3 1600mhz before running just over it's rated speed without much issue.

I need to check back, I have 12Gb I think
OCZ 2GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Gold (2x1GB) Dual Channel DDR3 (OCZ3G13332GK)
Might be what is inside, i will need to look, as eventually the 'platinum' version might have actually arrived
I think i will start by flashing the mobo up to most recent BIOS before I do anything else.

Just had a plod around
I think i actually had the 1333 ram running at 1604 or so
Using the i7 920 with locked 20 and 160blk, so it was at 3.2 or so.
I put things back to there and the system seems zippy
Cinebench went from 416 up to 537, which seems about right.

Will swap over to the other processor maybe this weekend, started to relearn what the various settings in BIOS do.

Okay from reading
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/thermal-grizzley-kryonaut-consistency.18827221/
I think i may have 'auto' voltage issues

With my i7 920 I managed a c15 of 550ish with 20*165 or so
Now plopping in the 5650 I am getting624 at complete auto stock.
Strangely when I set a 20 multi and 133 BLK, which should be stock, the system seems to thermally overload.
I can only assume that 'autovolts' is doing something v v odd to the chip.

Someone give me a rough reference voltage to type in to test perhaps 20 133, and then 20 165 etc
I will run some temp tests under a swift cinebench again.

Thanks, i will start playing around, i reseated my cooler, and the temp dropped 20 degrees, something must have been wrong, even thought paste and all looked right, might have bee a mismatch on pressure.

If you use the crossflashed BIOS from the Asus WS Pro, also bare in mind that it wont just be the x22 multi, it will then turbo to x23 on an X5650, so when it does that it would need more voltage if it's ONLY JUST stable at whatever voltage it runs for a x22 multi.

Much happier, after reseating the cooler, I am not going above 80 degrees, not even reaching 80, on air cooling, at 3.* with the memory at 1523 or so such.
Will run a few bits and pieces to see if the memory remains stable at that, 6 sticks of 2Gb, lol. I don't think it has ever been above 1333.
Nicely pleased with the 5650.
Giving me slightly over 880 on cinebench now, compared with the 550 the old i7 920 managed.

Temps seem a little high to me for 3.x GHZ

What cooler are you using? I'm running mine at 4.2ghz at x22 multi on all cores, with x23 boost when it feels the need and my gaming temps are a good 20 degrees lower. Stress tests one of the cores hits mid 60's at most.
